Hello Peter, My husband used to be a big fan of Star Trek, and all things by Roddenberry (spelling?). We met in 1967, when he was 24, and I was 15. I thought he sounded so modern and intelligent. I still have an old Star Trek belt buckle of his that one of the boys gave him long ago.
Hey, Ina, you spelled 'Roddenberry' right the first time! That means we're going to be great friends. Nice to see that you found your way to the new site. I'll warrant the lovely Yvonne had something to do with that.
Captain Kirk would mess up the lines. His acting style left a lot to be desired but he is the one and only James T. Kirk. And he is still doing it his way.
Yes, Pat, I've never really been a serious Shatner fan but I DO believe that his hammy and halting performance was one of the things which, however inexplicably, made the show work. If you've ever seen the first original pilot episode, with Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike, you'll have realized what a mistake it was the play the role completely straight.
I though Shatner did the part with greatness. Hmmmm...well better than most would have. I really have not seen him do anything great, but he is an entertainer.
I was always more of a Spock fan, but after seeing William Shatner in "Boston Legal", I developed more of an appreciation of his quirky style and when I got the opportunity to see the original "Star Trek" series for a second time, I paid Kirk a lot more attention than I had first time around.
