Although I have flown many miles in my lifetime, I never knew too much about navigation. When the individual monitors first appeared on the back of 747's, I was really excited about having another way to spend my 14 hour trips to Japan. We took off in Los Angeles, then I noticed that we were flying north. San Francisco, Oregon, Canada! What was going on...everybody knows that Japan is east of the USA. I pressed the call button for the attendant and when she arrived, I spoke calmly and with respect and asked "Do you think that you should remind the pilot that we really need to turn left?" She pleasantly smiled (and I think biting her tongue as well), and explained about navigational routes and told me that all is well! I still don't understand it all, but we did manage to land in Osaka!
