The burlap mesh netting that I used to cover the bulbs that I planted a few days ago after the squirrels had dug the previous ones up, seems to be working. They seem not to like it, because they could easily chew through it or, for that matter, the gaps in the netting are large enough in some places for them to dig. When I first put the rock garden in, I covered the whole thing in netting, then covered that with peat moss, and that worked until it composted in a couple of years. Since I am using only small patches of netting this time, I used compostable stakes to hold it down so that they simply didn't pull it away, and they haven't touched it yet.
