Last night when I let Pickles out and after he came back in I happened to look outside and saw a squirrel lying flat in the grass and not moving at all...for a long time, so I went out thinking Pickles killed it. Even with the noise of the patio door opening the squirrel was frozen in place and I thought maybe it's playing dead so Pickles doesn't bother it but Pickles was already inside. It took a broom and a lot of noise to make that squirrel move but it did finally so I was relieved. Then about an hour later I looked outside and the squirrel was laying in the exact same spot and again not moving at all. Does anybody know what it was doing?
How strange is that, I watch a lot of wildlife programmes but not seen this I know certain animals 'play dead' when being threatened Curious ................
Just checked this Chrissy and they 'do' play dead usually when a snake is nearby They also sleep 'very well' and look like they've konked out I was gonna suggest he had fallen from a tree but if he did the same thing when he came back .............
I did take a pic of it from in the house last night and I just looked at it and his eyes are open...so not sleeping.
It's hard to see but he stayed like that for way too long. As for snakes...Ive never seen one but do know they eat rats and we have the roof rats. Rats and snakes are my worst nightmare.
Snakes like to be 'charmed' Chrissy and you've got plenty of that So if ever you see one - try being charming ............
There is a scary video going around showing a snake coming out of an air conditioner and eating a rat. I ha ent looked at it because I'm afraid. My A/C vent is right above my bed. I could close and sweat all night.
Ugh - I wish I hadn't mentioned 'the snake' You've been fine all this time, so don't even think about it now - anyway Pickles would soon let you know We crossed over !
Our squirrels -- I call them "our squirrels" because I feed them, and have come to recognize individual squirrels -- have a habit of lying flat on hand rail of the fire escape where we keep the feeder. When it's a nice day and they've had enough to eat, they'll often lie flat on the railing, just looking over the yard, appearing very much like road kill. I don't know if they think it makes them less likely to be seen or if it's just a comfortable position for them.
Interesting! I usually don't even see too many squirrels in my yard but will be watching this one if it comes back.
