Do you remember, in 2014, when the Rolling Stone published an article about a fraternity gang rape, which had supposedly occurred in 2012, but which was later found to have never occurred? The magazine and journalist tried to pass it off as being representative of something that is occurring on U.S. campuses even if the specific incident did not occur as reported. Well, a jury just found the Rolling Stone journalist guilty of defamation, with actual malice, in the case brought by a University of Virginia associate dean who lost her job when the article was published, as she was responsible for handling claims of sexual violence on campus, and the article had claimed that she had ignored reports of the incident. The jury also found the magazine and its publisher responsible for defamation. The plaintiff is asking for $7.5 million, but can ask for a different sum after the verdict. The case will continue this week as the jury will consider damages. Source: Washington Post
Well, it's good that that he was found guilty. I read so many similar stories that I don't remember them all. Rape does happen...even gang rape but nobody should be accused falsely.
