    Broke off of the Greenland ice shelf, and drifted towards a tiny village......

    Massive 11-million-ton iceberg towers over little village in Greenland

    [IMG]

    "Why is this a threat? According to Greenland national newspaper Sermitsiaq, some residents of the 169-population village have evacuated for fear of a tsunami, if parts of the iceberg start breaking off this close to the village's shore, causing large waves."

    There is an image of it taken by satellite, but it would not copy. Entire story: https://www.yahoo.com/news/massive-11-million-ton-iceberg-013924494.html

    That village is going to have to start selling a lot of snow cones or making prefab igloos for Eskimos.

    Seriously, I would think that a few tug boats might be able to tow it further out for some controlled blasting. Dunno.
    Hooking on to it would be dangerous and I really do not know how that could be done but it’s a thought.

    I think it can be done, though. The Saudis proposed towing bergs to the Kingdom to provide fresh water until Israel developed a cheap desalinization process and gave it to them.

    @Bobby Cole
    Another article stated it had slowly drifted closer and closer, then stopped, probably grounded. However, it's feared a big chunk calving off could flood the town, from waves created. The height of ice extending above the water is said to be 300 feet!

    Good thought, but a grounded 11-million ton hunk would take some serious pulling effort, eh?

    That’s certainly a lot of ice. It kind of makes one think about the size of some glaciers that are touted to have caused the formation of some pretty big valleys in northern Idaho and such.

    I don't recall how they were going to do it, but I think they were dealing with free-floating ice. If I remember correctly, they were going to wrap a cable or something completely around it but I don't know what they were going to pull it with.

    It looks like the UAE is still thinking about it, but from Antarctica instead of the North Atlantic where the bergs would be smaller.
