    Porthleven is a town, civil parish and fishing port near Helston in Cornwall. It is the most southerly port on the island of Great Britain, and was originally developed as a harbour of refuge, when this part of the Cornish coastline was recognised as a black spot for wrecks in the days of sail. What interesting faces, especially the man on the front right. Does anyone know what are the strings of discs the two are carrying?

    They could be cork discs that they attach to the edges of the fishing nets.

    This photograph of Porthleven taken in January 1884 shows a very much smaller village than it is today. The Clock Tower and the Fisherman’s Institute is nearing completion, (on the extreme right of the photograph).

    Thanks for clearing that up! I was thinking they must be something to eat for lunch, like hard flat loaves of bread with holes in the middle for stringing. :rolleyes: :D

    Torrey Canyon disaster: 26 March 1967
    When the supertanker ran aground off the south-west coast of the UK, photographer Jane Bown travelled to Cornwall to document the devastating effects of the 117,000 tonnes of crude oil spilled.

    @Nancy Hart
    Pilchard, a species of sardine (q.v.) found in Europe. It is the local name in Great Britain and elsewhere.
