When I first heard about this I thought that you had a choice of a regular driver's license or a 'Real' driver's license. This also includes State IDs. After reading an email regarding this I see that there is no choice mainly because the 'Real' driver's license or State ID would allow you to enter into federal buildings. And who is not going to go to the Social Security Office at some time in their life. I need to find out more specifics relating to federal buildings. Also because any ID issued before July 2018 will need to get a new ID issued. (Moi). I wonder if it is going to cost the same or more maybe just an even exchange? I doubt it. To be continued...
Maine voters repealed REAL ID in Maine. Mainers who want a REAL ID can apply for one, but the default is one that is not REAL ID. So we do have a choice. As Cody says, we can still fly or enter federal buildings if we have our passports with us. I'd rather not have one because, without REAL ID, I can commit a federal crime and they won't allow me to enter federal prison.
I don't have one and have no plans to get one. My driver's license expires in 2 years so at that time I might rethink it.
That's exactly what I am going to do. From what I read the regular DLs will be shredded and only the REAL IDs will be issued. It will cost the same unless the States decide to increase them, you know, some kind of tax.
Oklahoma ‘s drivers license will be replaced at some date soon as it doesn’t qualify according to the Feds. or get a federal I. D. I’ve put my car up for sale as I guess it is about time I quit driving.
I have to renew mine before August. Maine usually has 17-year licenses, but I think that's shortened after a specific age. Last time, I was able to renew it online but every second renewal we have to go in to the DMV for the eye test.
I'm not in favor of REAL ID. It places hurdles for American citizens to go through while not doing a thing to deny illegals from being given driver's licenses. Plus, although I have no personal worries, I am philosophically opposed to carrying an ID that tracks me.
Isn't Real ID a response to 9/11 including a border wall in part? The towers fell in 2001 and 19 years later we are taking these measures. Of course we had to strip-search grandma first.
Like the Patriot Act, 9/11 was used as the excuse to enact it, but I think that both of these have more to do with monitoring and controlling American citizens than anything else.
