I had never even heard of this word before, and thought maybe others here had missed it somehow ,too. It was a hard decision whether to post this here or in the Funny Pages; but since you actually can get arrested for doing this, I opted for here. So, in case this is a new word for you ,too; manspreading is the term for men (but also done by women) sitting with their legs spraddled out like men often like to sit. If you are doing it at home on your couch -- no problem; but if you are on the New York Subway, then you can be arrested for taking up more than one seat. Serious ! http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/manspreading
I saw that new clip also. I never heard of manspeading although I have seen men seting like that. I often wonder why they sit like that but I can see going to jail over it.
As It's a minor inconvenience at best, how is this something that warrants an arrest ! Unless you're totally incapable of talking to strangers, this could easily be solved just by saying "could you please move your legs a bit".
When my boys were in puberty they would sit in such a manner. I saw it as a boy thing until I really thought about it. When the boys were 13 and 15, I asked them what they would think of a girl that would sit in the same manner. They thought about it, and said that girls would look slutish or trashy. For a couple of days, I watch as the boys tried to modify the "manspreading" positions. Now that was funny to watch. I know they didn't stop sitting in that fashion, but they did start watching how they sat in mixed company. The word I found the funniest in the clip was the word "pipsqueakish". Rain rain go away, but do come back another day.
Men sit in ways that are comfortable to them. When this restricts the space available to the people around them, then they should adjust their comfort level or look for something less crowded.
Thanks for the laugh! I had not heard of the word "manspreading" but I guess I've seen it in practice. No, I have never done any myself.
Men of valor, thy strength thou cast from side to side Why thou sit in such a manner, where is thy pride? While life has yet taken thee away in the world of your own In the train, spreading thy wings to a world unknown Your legs have taken their course to spread, as well, So, mind you, there may be some fair lady on board Be that gentleman and put thy shins with one accord.
