    The Bell model 47 helicopter used in the M*A*S*H tv series had a main rotor ground clearance of 9' 8" when under power on the ground.

    This is enough room for a 6-foot man to do Jumping Jacks and not be contacted by the rotor!

    So why does Hawkeye and his medical team all bend at the waist when approaching the helicopter?

    This has always bugged me!

    Maybe they were afraid of sniper fire near the helicopter. Maybe they learned to do it that way in training.

    First, it’s basic instinct to duck when anything is moving above our heads and second, it’s a good thing especially with the smaller breeds because;
    Anything can happen when we approach a helicopter no matter how high the main rotor(s) are above our heads; pilot error keeping the cyclic at center, wind shifts or sudden turbulence that might cause a lurch etc.etc.
    Heck, I’ve even seen a trim tab fly off and bury itself in another chopper.

    Rule of thumb is to always keep your head down and have the ability to see the pilot when approaching the helicopter and never, ever walk behind a helicopter when the tail rotor is moving.

    It shouldn't bug you at all. DUCKING is a natural response to any movement over your head particulary if you are tall like me at 6' 4I find my self doing a lot of ducking daily.
