This has been going on for around 5 days: most times when I start up the computer, pages refuse to load and I receive message 'Firefox is configured to proxy server that is refusing connections.' It's not only Firefox, though, because Chrome and IE don't load either.
Occasionally, the connection 'quits' and I get that message when I'm working online.

The only way I've been able to temporarily fix the problem is by doing SystemRestore when this occurs- but it gets awfully time-consuming and inconvenient.

The internet company said to contact Microsoft, but Microsoft's advice was similar to a family member's: change proxy settings. That didn't work either.

    Anybody have knowledge/advice about this?

I have sympathy with you Janice I have some problem and it seem doing what you think is right is not enough. I seem some times when on line the internet connection quits first I thought it had gone down and I would wait it out but my wife's phone using the same connection was still up. I had to reboot the computer to get mine back. Also two days ago Fire Fox updated and I lost all my book marks and passwords and when I tried to log into Seniors Only forum it would not let me in it took a couple of days.
If this is the biggest problem in life I guess I am doing OK

I have Firefox for years but the last two years it has become a problem. At the very top it will say...firefox not responding. Have started using Edge more..least it is faster.Plus suppose to be more compatable with Windows 10.

When I upgraded to Windows 10 and started using Edge, it asked me if I wanted to
    transfer my Firefox bookmarks.
Seems to work as well as any Windows based product can.

I'm thinking that @Harry Havens might have given you the answer that you need, above. I have used a proxy server from time to time. The Opera browser used to handle proxies very well, but lately I never seem to get a good connection with a proxy. As for browsers, I have several installed because I like to know if I am having the same problem on another browser, when I am having a problem. But, for the same reason that @Gloria Mitchell prefers Edge for Windows 10, I prefer Safari for my Mac. That didn't used to be the case with Windows and Internet Explorer, but the browser that comes with the OS tends to work more smoothly.

Hopefully it works. However, if that is indeed the actual reason, you may wish to check out this page and take heed... https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware

Also, there seems to be an issue with adware in regards to firefox and Windows 10 creator. I've read some about this stuff, but don't pretend to understand it.
