If this had happened once it'd be unusual, but it's happened at least 4 times during the last few years- various people in this city mistaking me for someone else, and insisting I'm identical to someone else.

I'm not from here, and to the best of my knowledge don't have any cousins etc. in the entire state.
When I was a child, my mother remarked a couple of times that everybody has a 'twin,' but I thought it was just old-fashioned superstition.

What do you guys make of this?

I have been mistaken for someone else too many times from high school to the present. I would like to just one time meet my 'look alikes.' The disappointment on the faces once they realize that I'm not the person they thought I was ... and they apologize. I'm never called the same name each time it happens.

I have mistaken people for someone else too.

I think they call it doppleganger - the double that we sometimes see. There are 2 kinds of doubles that I know. One is a person that resembles you but the resemblance is limited to the appearance. My husband has many of those doubles although he is still unique and the double can never be mistaken for him. With the other kind of double, we call it "kantanod" which is a local term to mean imitator. It mimics the person, the entire person which includes voice, mannerism, movement and other element of the personality. In other words, the kantanod is the exact duplicate of the person. There are so many cases that were documented where you see your friend in the hall and even had talked to him but he was actually abroad. It's quite scary, huh.

One place where I worked had a lady that worked there, and she looked almost like my daughter, Robin. I barely knew her; but the feeling was so strong that if the factory had caught on fire, I would have been running to rescue her , if the need had arisen .
An interesting thing, was that her name was. "Yvonne", just like mine. So she looked like my daughter, and had my name (which is also Robin's middle name).
She was a lot younger than me, and had her own friends, and worked in a different part of the building than I did; so I never really got to know her, or what she was like as a person.

I don't think that I have ever had people mistake me for someone else, and other than that one time, I can't think of ever seeing anyone else who had such a strong resemblance to anyone that I knew.

This is almost similar to my swearing I heard my Dad call my name from in the distance, after he had died, just as he had done so many times while I was growing up. My nephew believes it really was my Dad. I do not. frank

My Mom said to me just the other night that there was someone in her high school that looked like her twin. I remarked that I saw from the bus that I saw someone who looked like her from the bus so much so that I had to stare a bit at her for she looked so much like my Mother, but my Mother would not be where she was at the time. As we discussed about it she said to me that she had a schoolmate of hers that resembled her a lot and she knew her name. It was a bit eerie that I saw someone who looks like my Mom, but on closer examination I knew that wasn't her. I believe that there are people who resemble you a bit until you get very close to see the resemblance only.

My late husband looked so much like Jack Palance. I was in the kitchen, and the fellows had the movie Cops & Robertsons on. The whole movie was my husband, Palance's actions everything but age. Husband was much younger. The odd part about it, Jack Palance is Russian decent, and husband half Russian.:)

I am not sure I ever saw my exact double, but I used to see people all the time that looked like my uncle. I did a double take. One time, a kid who was outside our local supermarket was a dead ringer for my nephew. who lives a few states away. I literally almost went up to him, and said what are you doing here? Once I was right upon him though, I saw it was not him...but really...ANother time years ago, I saw a woman who was a dead ringer for my grandmother...I actually went up to her and said "Grandma?" When she turned around...I had to apologize. That was embarassing.:mad:

I was 5 years old and went to get some bits for me Dad - when I walked into the shop, there before me was Benny Goodman !!
I forgot me bits and ran out of the shop back to me Dad - 'I've just seen Benny Goodman Dad, you gotta come and see!'
He was laughing as he tagged along with me, I was so happy 'cos Dad was a huge jazz fan and had a vast record collection
When we got there Benny said 'hello again' and Dad explained. Well it wasn't him  but both agreed on the likeness :p

When I was at the flea market yesterday sharing my garden photos a man was talking to me as if he knew me. I didn't think any thing of it because he had questions about the care of canna lilys. The conversation lasted about 5 minutes and then he apologized and stated he had forgotten my name.o_O I never told him but responded Von and this look of embarrassment was apparent and he apologized again because he thought I was someone else. His name was Edgar :D. Oh well...

I don't believe that everyone has a double but, given the number of people who have lived upon this earth, it's quite likely that there are or have been other people who look a lot like most of us.

I'm not sure if everybody has a 'double/twin' but I believe there are many. I have actually met mine. Back in my teens I would be mistaken for another gal at many different social events. And, we had the same first name to make it more confusing to people. So in time I learned she was around my age and lived in the adjoining town to mine. And, she experienced the same the same with people thinking she was me. Well, one day I was taking the bus to the local popular teen swimming place and sitting directly across from me was her. We both immediately noticed each other as it was like looking in a mirror. So we got to chat some en route to swimming and learned how we were both experiencing the mistake in identities. Soon after my family moved to another town and I never saw her again. If it were today, with the social media, I'm sure we would be in touch. Strangely enough I had twin sons, fraternal, they don't look alike, just related. They just turned 42 last week.

While I don't believe we all have a "twin" that is identical to us...I do believe there are people who look enough like us that many might think they are our twin.

I have read of some cases where women had twin babies (identical) and gave up one child because at the time they felt they could not afford two of them. Years later they end up finding their identical twin that they had never known about. I also read of a case where a married couple had identical twins and divorced while they were still babies. The couple decided to each take a child and neither one told the children they had a twin. Many years later when these twins somehow found each other yet they did not know they were even related until they had DNA tests done.

So while in the above cases these people really do have an identical twin....most of us just have someone or maybe a few someones who look very much like us. :)
