Every year, to commemorate the Allied invasion of France at Normandy, I'll watch the movie "The Longest Day", which has a cast of superstars, headed by John Wayne. I was only 7 years old at the time of the invasion, and have been watching this epic film every year since it was released in 1962. (57 years) Hal
@Hal Pollner Not too many here old enough to remember the news of the invasion or VE-day. I have not seen much about it on TV today either. I think too many have forgotten what we all owe to the "greatest" generation.
I don't think it's a question of being old enough to be eternally grateful to that generation, to their decision, to those brave service men and their efforts as I am. For that you don't even need to have been one of them (not your fault if you were born later) but you can still take an interest in what was happening at the time. Everybody can and should appreciate that what they did saved Europe from a different fate. I do.
I'm literally watching the Normandy remembrance service Live in Normandy now, with all the veterans there.... along with the Royal family
Some fantastic photos on this link... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...unearthed-images-shared-75th-anniversary.html
And here is an interesting article about “Scotty “ , from Star Trek fame, (“Beam me up, Scotty !”) who was wounded seven times in the war. https://www.warhistoryonline.com/wo...teran-chief-mechanic-starship-enterprise.html
A group of people from Millinocket were together at D-Day. They all enlisted together after graduating from high school and were together at Normandy. These were people who had grown up together, then to find themselves in what felt like hell to them on the beach at Normandy. My dad served, but he was in the Pacific. His brother died somewhere in Europe.
@Yvonne Smith - it was interesting reading about the 'cigarette case' - these cases saved a good few lives
Yes - I'd have liked to have seen these countries represented at the D Day ceremony yesterday, even if they weren't actually on that scene - or would that be wrong ?
We know where we've been but where are we going? I can see the past to a certain point, and am reminded of things I did not see. I can't see very far into the future. Not a clear crystal ball, not even a spotlight into tomorrow. Its an uncertain future, more clouded than anytime in my past. It is cloudy but I do not know if it will rain or the sun will shine.
"it was interesting reading about the 'cigarette case' - these cases saved a good few lives
They probably did provided that there was the right distance. Also Frederick the Great (a Prussian king in the old days) survived in a battle because a bullet was stopped by his snuff box. Saw it displayed at a Berlin exhibition.
That story is such a good one Thomas, just show's these simple things were life savers It also reminded me of my darling Grandmother with her snuff box - 'do you want a pinch Patsy' ……. @Thomas Stearn
Sorry, Patsy - and anyone else who is confused by this. I was replying to your post in another thread but I put it in the wrong place. While I was moving it, you replied.
