This year, International Literacy Day (8 September) is celebrated across the world under the theme of ‘Literacy in a digital world’.

Globally, at least 750 million youth and adults still cannot read and write and 250 million children are failing to acquire basic literacy skills. This results in an exclusion of low-literate and low-skilled youth and adults from full participation in their communities and societies.

Maybe they need to check their own literacy.

The use of technologies to better asses and monitor literacy with digital tools, real time data and analytics, was also highlighted. Presenters from the OECD, UNESCO Institute for Statistics and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum examined the potential of digital technology to better monitor literacy learning and literacy levels.
