Fun interactive quiz in the New York Times tries to place where you were brought up by the way you pronounce some words, and, words you use for things. The first quiz is for anyone not in the UK and Ireland
    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...ype=Multimedia

This second one is for all of us within the UK and Ireland...

I answered it twice, once in the dialogue I spoke as I was growing up in another country...and again since I've lived in England for the last 40 plus years... and it got my area correct both times...

    UK and Ireland Quiz....

Wow! Hometown in dark red. I didn't expect that, because there was no answer for several of the questions. Maybe that means we didn't talk much where I grew up. Ha!

Mine came up with Spokane ( a pretty direct hit !), Tacoma, also very good, I lived a lot of years on the northwest coast of Washington, and the 3rd one was Salt Lake, which is still a western state.
So, mine was really accurate also.

Oh, I didn't know how to interpret the three cities at the bottom. In that case, it picked my hometown as the first choice.

I was judged to have grown up in northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin. I have never lived in either place.

The words “ya’ll” and “crawfish” pretty much gave it away and yes, it pegged me as coming from New Orleans (or Baton Rouge).

It had me in Birmingham, Al, first; Winston Salem, NC second; And Montgomery, AL. third.
I am in NC but not Winston Salem.

Some of the terms we use are the same as some of the words which are used in parts of the USA..for example where my husband comes from in Essex (county)..he would always use the word crawfish like you @Bobby Cole

Computer started going nuts and ads kept popping up- but was wrong on me..am born and bred Texan--Louisiana,Alabama, and etc as possible birth places.
Perhaps my language pronunciation has become overly diversified due to exposure of many different US dialects. Wow that was a mouthful:D

I agree Gloria , which is why I took the test using the terms for things I said as a child in Scotland until I left for England when I was 19 years old... and then the test for the words I've come to use for the last 40 years in England...and in Scotland it got me on the west coast which is correct , and here in England it got me right here in the London region...which is amazing because during that 40 plus years I've lived all over England where accents varied considerably, and also abroad in Spain, Italy and Germany

That's the first one of those tests that actually had me born in the right place.
