When I was in grade school, we used to celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July. But we also celebrate another Independence Day on June 12th. So we had 2 holidays for that purpose. But in the course of time, legislators had removed the July 4th celebration.

Our country was under the Spanish rule since the 1500 and we gained informal independence in 1898, June 12th. So that's the reason for the ceremony we are observing now. For the 4th of July, it was granted by the US to coincide with their own Independence Day called July the 4th.

With the increasing Hispanic and Latino population in the United States, in some places but particularly in several cities of California, New York City and Washington DC, another independence day is celebrated on May 5th, for the Mexican independence.

However May 5th in Mexico is not the independence day, but the Cinco de Mayo battle prior the mid-19th century French occupation, but Mexico's independence day is celebrated on September 16th.

Yet still more curious fact, is that most Mexicans celebrate it the day before, September 15th, day of the so-called "Dolores Shout" that got the battle started.

In 1986, the so called People Power revolution happened that paved the way for a new regime. Those days of Feb. 22 to 25 were marked as the new independence days and lately Feb. 25 was declared an official holiday to commemorate the day when the dictator, former president Marcos had left the country. Every year, that day was celebrated by the government with an event to commemorate with the participation of the original personalities involved. But the masses? That holiday is a mall day or a vacation when it coincides to a long weekend.

It seems like many of the people here in the United States have lost the true meaning of our Independance Day as well, @Corie Henson . While it is not so much a shopping day here, it is the largest mid-summer holiday, and is usually celebrated by having a BBQ or picnic.
Since it is now celebrated as a 3-4 day weekend, many people will also take their vacation around that time, and it gives them an extra few days of vacation time.
They showed one of those programs on the news where they ask people what is being celebrated, and many of the younger people really had no idea what it was an independance from, or when it took place originally.

It seems like most of the federal holidays have become that way, and lost the original meaning.
Memorial Day was originally for remembering soldiers killed in the war; and then for putting flowers on the grave of any dead family members; but now, it is kind of the first big "party time" of the spring for most people.
