    Frank, it could be worth restoring your computer to an earlier time, before you had the problem. Use your computers system restore option.

    I'm using windows 7 but later versions should be similar...
    Control Panel: System and Security: Action Centre - Restore your computer to an earlier time.
    Open System Restore : Next: Tick the box.. show more restore points.
    Highlight a date, click next and just follow the prompts.

    I've had to do this a few times when things have gone weird, it usually works :)

    @Frank Sanoica

    BTW, because the computer would now be at and earlier time, you will probably need to let your Internet Security update itself.

    Don't make me weep Frank.. :D

    It is way past time that you got yourself an IPAD , @Frank Sanoica ! ! Seriously, once you have an iPad, you should not have any problems ever again.
    Yes, it takes a little while getting used to having a touchscreen instead of a mouse-pointer; but once you get the hang of it, you will wonder how on earth you ever put up with using the laptop all of these years.
    Get a keyboard case, and then the tablet will be just about like having a mini-laptop, but a lot more user-friendly. Even if you get a different brand of tablet, you will probably like it better than the laptop once you get used to using it; but I have always used Apple iPads and iPhones, and those are all that I can vouch for.
    Here is a picture of my iPad and the keyboard case, and you can see that it looks very much like a laptop; but it is lightweight, can be used with or without the keyboard, and has room for all kinds of apps. You will enjoy apps, Frank, you just do not know it yet.......

    Cannopt restore to earlier date. Havev done this before many times. After login,,m a flag shows up saying computer is in a protected mofde, no fil;es accessed will be retaiunerd All favorites gobne, all pictures gone, also dioc uments. Home paghe was Yahoo, now MSN, can c hange setting under internet options, but does not remain set on yahoo. Thios alol started after some kind of bad shutdown. Cant seem to get it back./

    F11 at startup displays the 3-chgoices for restore and recovery, choose restore, it red flags it where used to show restore points, say cannot be restored. Triued recovery, with save files, iot worked saving them for 25 minutes., then showed "to co,mplete recovery, press "begin". Pressed bergin, would not do anything atr all.

    If I wasn't hooked on Macs, and was looking mostly for an inexpensive computer, I'd shop Tiger Direct. I shopped with them almost exclusively before I switched to a Mac. They sell Macs too, but Macs aren't cheap. The Mini Mac might be affordable, though. Even on the cheap, which I have had to do plenty of times in my life, I don't recommend used. I'm sure there are good deals to be had, but you're also likely to be buying someone else's problems. Refurbished, maybe. But if getting online is the main purpose of having a computer, you can get a new one for just over a hundred dollars, and sometimes even less.

    Frank, if your Windows menu is accessible just select the Recovery Manager

    upload_2017-1-14_17-30-24.png

    At the prompt select 'Allow' --- on the next window as shown below select 'System Recovery' and follow any prompts with 'Yes.' and let it do it's thing.

    upload_2017-1-14_17-28-13.png

    Selecting this option restores your Windows operating system back to the factory setting. It does not delete any files or photos that you already have saved to your hard drive.

    My experience with using F-keys only resulted in added confusion.

    If this doesn't work then you may be in the market for a new PC.

    "You hav e been logged oin with a temporary profiule. You cannot access your files and files created in this profile will be deleted when you log off.To fix this log off and try logging on later. Please see the event log for details, or contact your system adnministrator."

    My suggestion is buy a new one. I saw one in Walmart for under a hundred bucks a few weeks ago, and Best Buy routinely has low-end computers in the neighborhood of $100-150. I don't know what you use your computer for, but if your main objective is to be able to get online, you can get a Kindle Fire for fifty bucks or so, although I don't know if you can connect a Kindle Fire to a keyboard and monitor, and I'm thinking probably not. You can do so with an iPad but, of course, iPads are more expensive. There are some here who'd disagree, I'm sure, but I'd opt for a low-end computer unless you really want an iPad for other reasons. Since you already have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, you could get away with buying just the computer itself.

    Okay, Frank. Try switching to another user. You may have to create/add one along with another password.

    Oh @Frank Sanoica, you mean you've lost a lot of stuff you've been working on, photographs, and other things? I am so sorry, and I fully understand how distressing that can be.

    @Frank Sanoica

    I'm not sure if you're saying this Frank, but I hope you haven't lost anything important.
    The computer's internal file backup system seems pointless to me, if the computer fails.
    It's always best to backup important things on an external hard drive.

    @Frank Sanoica what a bummer losing your writing as a result of all the chaos.

    I wish I could have been there myself to help you. This is one thing that I like to do when it comes to working with Windows. I lost files and photos years back because I didn't understand Windows enough to prevent it. Since then between myself and my son I have been able to avoid that as @Paul Sparky mentioned but don't give up.

    Thank you all, especially @Von Jones. Here's a breakdown (perfect description) of events. Not confirmed yet, supposedly during those 2 hours, it uploaded 14 gigs of files on 2 discs. Mistakenly, I inserted a CD ROM first, then saw on it's back marking indicating 70 Megs, I assumed that meant capacity, which would mean a whole slew of such discs would be needed. My wife had fetched it from her hoard of stuff above the computer nook, a place I dare not trespass! After words (afterwards), she got a DVD-R, capacity on it was marked something in Gigs. Machine quickly spit out the CD, full, indicating there would be 3 (after DVD) needed, total. It stopped after just the two, leading me to believe some files were not saved, or the total indicated, 14G, was erroneous. At that point, I went to bed.

    She uses a Chromebook 11 for most everything except the pictures, which she takes during our daily nonsense, and posts them on the local Laughlin FB. The pics get downloaded in the laptop; there were over 500 stored there. Her FB business goes directly into My Pictures, but other forums of my own use do not. Hence, I use Servimg.com, like Photobucket, to assign an URL to each. When I post a pic here, I need not hit "image" at all, as the pics copy and paste directly. Servimg converts all of them to 800 pix wide, for forum use, automatically.

    Now, Chrome uses Google base. I asked her this morning why she is not storing pics here (Chrome, I'm using now), note how nice and crisp the keyboarrd works, she contends images captured by the digital camera cannot be downloaded in the Chrome, that only pictures taken using IT can be stored and worked with. I contend that cannot be so. Carrying this as a camera would be rather ridiculous compared to the little DC.

    This all sounds like I know what I'm talking about, doesn't it? Good at B.S.'ing in my old age! I was trained in Electronics on black & white T-V system, only the basics of Electric Theory have remained unchanged, the actual guts accomplishing all this miraculous stuff are totally different from that back then. So, it irks me no end to be unable to work with, with predictable results, the new technology. Sitting in a restaurant right now, but later will confirm/deny positive results with the H-P. I've sworn over and over the past decade, I will never allow myself to become prisoner to a Technology Revolution which was foisted on the consumer worldwide, where IMO it might have been better kept asa commercial tool only. Like running automobile engines!

    Well @Frank Sanoica, I don't think I did much to help only be supportive in your moment of crisis so 'You're welcome, friend.'

    Now I understand the message you were getting was a warning prompted by the disc being in the drive when trying to initiate the recovery function. Nice save.
