We're not Catholic but in Santa Cruz California I would see Nuns on occasion. My mother worked at a Catholic retreat house in the hills that was a former resort. The order was very liberal and the Nuns were very nice. We ended up with two cats from them, that had probably been dumped in the area. There were other Nuns in the area and was told that Nuns that did not wear habits also worked at the Catholic hospital but wore street clothes. I haven't seen a Nun in Habit in years. Did you have Nuns in your area and not anymore and do people in other countries still have Nuns about?
There are nuns in habits her, but most orders no longer require them to worn in public. I believe the cloistered orders always wear them.
@Don Alaska I don't think there were any cloistered orders in Santa Cruz. The nuns were out and about and drove. There was even a nun at the retreat house who became a nun after her husband passed away and had kids and grandkids. Like I said, it was a liberal order. But they all work habits.
Cloistered nuns are ones you never see. They are separated from the world, just as cloistered brothers are. They are few and far between everywhere. We have a convent here that is a cloister and only has five nuns. As far as I know, there are no cloistered monks here.
