I am a total believer that our animals understand a great deal more than we give them credit for. My beloved Chipper understood everything I said, and most of what I was thinking, and when he was puzzling something out, I could see the little wheels turning in his mind.
I have read about communication with animals, and it appears that they can “see” pictures in our mind, so I try to envision something that will help them to understand what I am doing and why, and just say talk to them, “this is going to help make you well again” while you mentally envision Bubbles happy and playing and feeling well again.

Bubbles just went outside to do wees and negotiated all five steps of our decking. He has not done that since last Friday nite.

Yes I have often wondered whether our pets know what we humans were saying to them. They actually read our minds you say.. interesting. Pity we can not read theirs.

Bubbles continues to recover. Is still not eating solids so the buttermilk is his only sustenance.. a bloody miracle drop it is.

What an absolute cutie Yvonne. and a stoic little fellar like my Bubbles

Many thanks to you all for your concern. Bubbles, my wife and I are so grateful. Now all we want is for him to start eating solids.

Yeeehaaaa!!! Bubbles started eating solids last nite.

He still shows indications of a lingering infection and fever.

Yvonne in your opinion is kefir better than buttermilk.

I have never given kefir to a dog. However, it is easy to make your own kefir, and it has more probiotics than buttermilk or yogurt, so it could very well be better. I didn’t know about it back when Chipper was so sick.
Also, when Chipper was able to eat again, my vet said to feed him chicken, and that is what I did. He ate cooked chicken, white meat mostly, and that helped him recover.
My vet said it was easier for Chipper to digest chicken than beef.
