I have always just done the copy/paste thing, too, @Chrissy Page . I happen to not like links that I can't SEE what the actual link is taking me to; so when someone posts a link on here that is like @Ken Anderson wants us to do, and it just says "here" or some such thing instead of showing the whole link, I just never , ever even open that link to see what it is about.
Therefore, I never post links that way either, and (except for youtube) have just decided that i would probably stop writing posts with links.
But , since you asked me to see how to do this, I am trying it.
I followed the instructions, and can get the hyperlink to copy that way, but not to be replaced with a word. I must be missing some little thing that replaces the link with the highlighted word; but thus far, i am not sure what it is that I didn't do right.
I will keep trying and see if I can get it figured out, Chrissy.
Maybe one of the others here who uses an iPad can tell us both how this works ?

You don't replace the hyperlink with a word. You type the word, highlight it, then, by clicking the link icon above, you turn the word into a hyperlink by pasting the URL into the space provided by clicking on the link icon.

    hyperlink-word.jpg First, type the word.

    hyperlink-highlight.jpg
    Next, highlight the word.

    hyperlink-link.jpg Click the link icon.

    hyperlink-box-empty.jpg
Once you've clicked the link icon, the link box will pop up.

    hyperlink-box-url.jpg
Paste or type the URL into the link box, click the "Insert" button and your link is in place. Once you "Post Reply" it will be there, as below.

I think that's my problem, highlighting the word on my ipad.

    image.jpg

What do I choose? If I don't choose anything, it's not highlighted anymore.

In that screen shot, the word is highlighted. If you wanted to highlight words to the left or to the right, as well, you would drag the blue dots (handles), the right one to the right to include words to the right in highlighting, and the left to the left, etc. But as it is in that screenshot, if you were to click on the link icon (the one to the right of it is to unlink something that you had previously linked), the URL box would pop up and you could paste the link in it.

When the word turns blue, it's highlighted. Some computers may use a different color perhaps, but the idea would be the same.

That is exactly what happens with me when I try to do it, Chrissy ! I looked up directions for posting a hyperlink with the iPad, and we are doing just what the instructions (and Ken) are saying to do; but when it comes out on the page, it shows the whole link and not the word.
There ha to be some other little trick to doing this with the iPad, and I will keep trying to figure out why it is not working.
In the meantime, I will just try to write posts that don't have to have a link to go with them.

    Chrissy......how did you do it ? ?
Okay ! I just turned mine into a link, too ! Posting the reply is the "secret" to making it work.

    Lol, I forget.

I think I went to get my link and copied it, then I came here and wrote that sentence. I highlighted the word "here" but didn't choose copy or anything.

Then I went to the hyperlink and inserted my URL. When done it doesn't look like it worked but when I hit "post reply", it did and the word was in blue.

That wasn't really even the issue before Ken, because it didn't work anyway before.

My problem was not highlighting the word "here" or whatever word I would use.

In cases like those long URLs Ken you might want to try the facilities of Google URL shortener or Bitly to shorten the URL you wanted to use.

Well no, because text hyperlinks are more efficient because they are integrated with the sentences.

Of course. I got you. But in cases you wanted to promote a URL link say to social media like Twitter or Facebook, etc. the hyperlink apps offered by Google and Bitly are handy and easy.

I have been to Twitter these days since I need to promote a client's product on social media using Hootsuite, a social media app for promotion. This make me think to promote our website, SeniorsOnlyClub in it. Thanks Ken for giving me an idea. ;) I'll think of some nice campaigns to promote it later so I can help in creating awareness about this website and help us generate funds from the traffic ad. That's another way, I can help aside from the side ad for SeniorsOnlyClub I will be putting on my personal blogs. I'll be posting the links on these soon as I can come up with them. :)
    That made me think to

Keep in mind that while some people will click on a link in order to get further information about something that is being discussed, it's better to answer the question, reply to the discussion, or post something of substance. Clearly, I don't speak for everyone but I am thinking that most people don't click on the links at all but are more interested in the social aspects of carrying on a conversation. If it was just the information they wanted, they could go to their favorite search engine or library.

I will usually say what I have to say, and maybe post a link to whatever source I might have so that people know that I didn't just pull it out of my butt or something, and sometimes I'll quote some relevant parts of my source to back up what I'm saying. I think that works best, as far as conversation goes. A couple of years from now, most of the links you post will no longer be any good but your words will still be here. I know I'd rather have your words than your links.

Please, if it's worth posting a link to, then it should be worth saying something about whatever the link might take you to. Why did you find that site to be interesting or worthwhile? What are we going to find there? Do you agree or disagree with it? And so on.
