last night when I was getting rid of some files and clearing out some cotton lined whicker baskets which are not very old maybe just 5 years if that......near the bottom of one, was a folded broadsheet newspaper... . I wondered why I would have put a newspaper in the basket, , and also odd that there was even one in there because I rarely buy newspapers in the UK, much less keep one, so my curiosity was sparked.. and I never expected what I saw.. This..... In almost perfect condition, except for some yellowing where it had been folded...... 119 years old !!!! Neither hubs or I have the first idea how it got there...
Mysterious but a wonderful find nonetheless Holly!! It looks to be in such great shape I do wonder if the London Express might be interested in it. Or, a nice bit of memorabilia in a few frames?
I dunno if they would Bobby..but I think I'd like to keep it, I absolutely love historic memorabilia, and the fact it's reading material from over a century ago is just cherry on the top for me... but How did it get in my own little relatively new whicker basket, where I just keep my personal handwritten diaries .. ?... I have no idea, I'm just stunned!! if I'd found it tucked away in a corner of the loft somewhere I might have understood it more.. but here right here in my livingroom on a shelf in a basket?.. This is just sooo strange!!
If I were heavily into the paranormal, I might go directly to the obits and see if there are any clues. I do believe that England is particularly famous for .....ghosts.......! A Mystery! The Game is Afoot!
@Holly Saunders What a wonderful item to have in your possession!! You could make a xerox copy and send to the local school library. It is a treasure. Also, check and see best way to store it so it doesn't get paper eating bugs now that you've opened it up. Find something that keeps air from getting to it like a freezer bag and maybe check at an antique bookstore for the proper way to preserve it.
They are from an episode of 'The Twilight Zone." In it, the Blue People paint our daily lives second by second like a cartoonist paints his cartoon. One morning, a couple wake up just seconds before they were supposed to. They reach for things and they are not there. They reach again and it is there. This goes on all day. Did you ever look for something where you know you left it and it's not there? Then look for it somewhere else, look again at the first place and it is there? The Blue People just got around to painting it there.
@Holly Saunders What are people saying who live around you? I think this is totally fascinating. I showed your post to my daughter and she thought it was beyond interesting. She asked my why we never found any cool sh*t in our garbage cans!
Hey Holly, where did you buy the basket? Possibly the thrift shop or garage sale? Naw....you would have seen it ....probably, maybe.
I've not told anyone else apart from my family, and my best buddy and you lot.... everyone has had the same reaction as you all...totally stumped!!
