So, I am at a small store buying a small purchase. I hate the parking lot in this store, cuz it is way to small and there are gas pumps and cars going every which way, well I got distracted, and my rear view mirror is still down, although I have tried gluing it. I take responsibilty because I really wasn't paying that much attention, anyway...I grazed this one guys car when I was backing out...since I was going about 1 mph..there was miminal damage but of course he ended up calling the coppers.. Fast forward to an hour later, the cop said he would not file a report with DMV cuz there was no real damage nor would he issue a ticket, but it ruined my day!!! Dang! Oh well...I am not gonna stop at that place again..I hate their stupid parking lot!

I'm surprised the police came out. Well, at least it didn't cost you. That's what I like about Fresno, parking anywhere is pretty easy.

You should see the Trader Joe's in Monterey and Pacific Grove! crazy!

I've had close calls, and I know one of these days it will happen. I do see the changes in my attention span around the house, but I think when I drive I am always on top of whatever is going on around me. But I don't think I am. I'm glad it wasn't anything damaging, and you didn't get a ticket @K E Gordon. Thank goodness;)

Backing up without a rear view mirror is not a safe practice. You can't blame the parking lot. You were lucky, this time.

I noticed it is harder to turn my neck too, but I have all my mirrors, and I love using the side mirrors on my truck. But I still find myself straining (overkill) to see every, little thing especially in parking lots.

Well, I don't know yet, because the insurance company may raise my rates! They didn't seem too worried about it when I talked to them on the phone. I hope this guy takes it to a mechanic who can fix it on the spot..but I don't know he was acting like it was some big deal when there was a tiny scratch, that I am not so sure wasn't there before and a piec of plastic that fell off. I told him i was sorry...well hopefully the insurance companies will sort it out...and it won't end up costing me anything.

I don't think I was lucky! if I had been lucky, the guy would have said no biggie, don't worry about it, I will have my brother in law fix it or something! However, yes, it could have been worse, I could have gotten a ticket.

You were lucky you didn't run over a person, or had a different cop.

kind of hard to run over someone going 1mph if that, however, as I said, things could have been worse. I will be lucky if there are no insurance repercurssions.. What I was really lucky about is the fact it happened here instead of in another county., they have small town attitudes here which are both good and bad. Friends and neighbors and all that..which is usually nice, but not in every situation, trust me I know of what I speak there.

I have all my mirrors but I just don't trust them so always turn my head.

@K E Gordon , I don't know if you mentioned this or not but did you take a picture of his scratch? Or did the police put it in the report?

We have a problem with keeping our windshield rearview mirror on the windshield. I tired some glue from an auto parts store, but it didn't work. Now I use Super Glue. That glue seems to stay on the longest. Unless absolutely necessary, we don't drive the truck when the windshield rearview mirror is off. Luckily, we have two vehicles.

Our local Walmart parking lot has pretty tight parking. When backing out of the parking spot, I have to use both side mirrors, the rearview mirror and even turn my head around and look to see if anyone is walking, about to drive by or backing out of a spot behind me. It seems like a lot of drivers, even though they see a person's backup lights on, will continue to drive behind you. And, most people walking, don't pay any attention to a vehicles backup lights being on and keep on walking.

Today, a driver has to not only turn his head, but make sure all mirrors are available.

All very true, Cody! Some are very tight like you say....

I've probably had my share of near misses...thankfully I always stopped in time.

I did have a shopping cart hit my old Altima once and it did some damage but I only had liability on that car and the person who's cart it was didn't leave a note. So, I just left it as it was. Traded that car in later anyway for my new one.

Ugh. I hated driving back home for this reason. The lots/lanes/streets were very narrow, and people would just walk wherever, pull out as they pleased, and shopping carts were everywhere. There are some like that here, particularly in older sections, but thankfully, where I live, the parking lots are larger and easier to pull in and out of, for the most part. I've never had an issue with my rearview mirror falling off *knocking on wood*, but I do have the issue with my passenger side mirror. I've put it back up at least 3-4 times now, and it's streaked with black from the stuff I use, but I don't care. All I care is that it's still there, and I can use it. I also crane my neck and look every which way before moving the vehicle. I'm used to going around cats, trash bags, etc., all with a constant audience across the street when pulling out, so I tend to be somewhat careful, and I try to carry that attitude with me in my travels.

I am also meticulous when it comes to places with unsafe parking area. There was a time that our car was on the losing end in a supermarket's parking area when it was grazed by another car. And since it was only a minor scratch so no case was filed as if nothing happened. But the small scratch ruined our day.

Well, I did tell the guy I was sorry, but it really ruined my day, because he will get his car fixed...and I may end up having to pay hihger rates or something. I hope not though. It remains to be seen. I think I pay less for insurance than anyone I know, so I think there is a good possibility I will end up paying more..but maybe it will only be a few dollars..she says hopefully...;)
