I’m watching Empire Falls, based on the book by that name by Richard Russo. Set in the fictional town of Empire Falls, Maine, the two-part movie was filmed in Skowhegan, Kennebunkport, Winslow, and Waterville.

When it was filmed in 2005, a statewide call was made for Mainers who wanted to participate in the movie, mostly as uncredited extras. They were looking particularly for people who looked like stereotypical Mainers, as well as those who had the characteristic Maine accent for speaking parts, and I know a few people who were picked for spots in the film version, although I don’t believe any of the main characters were actual Mainers. There is Ed Harris, Helen Hunt, Paul Newman, Robin Wright, Aidan Quinn, Joanne Woodward, Dennis Farina, and other people that I’ve never heard of. Still, the movie is good, and did well as an HBO miniseries, I think; but perhaps I especially like it due to the familiarity of its Maine scenes, although that’s not even my part of Maine.
