    I have respect for certain members of the Royal family, but consider it an outdated institution. I am definitely for a republic, bicameral with a strong civil service to advise and veto dangerous decisions made by politicians and the voters, accompanied by a tribune of the plebs style official who protected the poor

    Don't want much then Harry :p
    What are the chances though - there will be changes when William takes over, I feel both the boys are like Diana
    and not keen on the pomp (or should that be 'pompous') :p

    You're right, Patsy. I have probably read far too much Sci fi. I agree with you,, I think William and Harry may clean up the image of the Royal family.

    @Harry Kemp
    I truly think they will - although it seems Charles could have another 20 plus years yet :eek:
    Seems the Royals live a 'long' life ................

    He's certainly not the most popular royal. Even when he married Diana I made fun of him with a badge (pin) having the motto ' The King and Di' and a doctored photo of him and her; Charles was completely bald.

    Tried to find it, as a German student pestered me for the badge, so it's long gone and probably in an antique dealer's in Düsseldorf, along with other tat!

    From what I understand, her boyfriend enjoyed going fast in vehicles. He kept urging the driver to go faster and faster (which his friends said he often did). At the time of the crash, the vehicle was going 100 mph. So when it came time to make that minor turn the vehicle spun out of control. No conspiracy just an accident that could have been avoided.

    @Texas Beth - The only 'flaw' with that, is we will never know the speed of the car, no investigation allowed into that and many other things

    It strikes me we can never be certain of anything, even if we were there. We all have our own beliefs, skills, etc, which influence how we - literally - see things.
    I don't know if you have ever seen a famous historical event portrayed by different people over long periods of time. This gives the strange experience of looking at an old film and thinking to yourself things like: " Yes, a typical 1950s view of the Roman Empire"

    May I toss in my 2 cents on the conspiracy theory regarding Princess Diana's death. He was with the rich Egyptian Dodi Fayed who, if my memory is correct, owns that huge mall in London. Based on the circumstances surrounding the car crash, it is clearly an accident. However, in any accident, foul play cannot be totally discounted. My take on the foul play, as presumed by some talks that was planned by the royal family, has logic behind it. The royals have a reputation to protect (at least in this modern times) and with Princess Diana having affair with different men might ruin the name since no matter how we look at it, the princess has been part of the royal family.

    But my personal opinion veers more toward an accident than on the foul play.

    I still lived in the UK at the time and whilst any death is a sad event what followed (for me) was pure overkill. But then I'm not a fan of the institution of royalty and not interested in their lives. I moved to France soon after her death and over the years I've come to enjoy living in a republic and being a citizen rather than being a subject under a monarchy.

    Whether or not it was an assassination we'll never know because the only possible people who might have ordered such and assassination were well protected by "the establishment".

    One day we all will know the truth about what really happened....but I have no doubt in my mind there definitely was a conspiracy and Diana's death was no accident. And neither was the "smear campaign" to try to ruin a perfectly good and decent woman's reputation. She had a right to be happy too...not just the royals.
