I haven't really read the whole story but looks like there's been a government takeover.

(CNN)Some Turkish military units have attempted an uprising that will be not allowed to succeed, the country's prime minister said late Friday in a phone interview with Turkish broadcaster A Haber.

The uprising is "an attempt against democracy and the will of the people," Prime Minister Binanli Yildirim told state news agency Anadolu. "Those who attempted this will pay the heaviest price."
One tweet showed a military jet flying extremely low over the capital Ankara.

Seems the story is still changing by the hour.

It hasn't even been a month since that attack by ISIS at the airport in Turkey. What a mess!

So much happening lately, bet people are having second thoughts on travel to Europe.

We are watching the news right now in CNN. Turkey, particularly Istanbul, is still in a state of confusion. It is not clear who is in command - the government of President Erdogan or the military that staged the coup d' etat. The president had called for the people to come out to the streets in support of the government. As of the latest, there is a video showing soldiers being escorted by men who look like cops. It seems that soldiers who participated in the coup have surrendered. I hope the situation will not escalate although it is already spreading to other cities like Ankara.

We have experienced a coup d' etat in 1986 which toppled the presidency of Marcos. In the years that followed Cory Aquino's presidency was also hounded by coups although most are peaceful and the activity confined to the military sector only.

From what I saw earlier, Erdogan is still/back in charge. Apparently the coup was only attempted by some, not all, of the military, and one of those involved (at least) has been beheaded. Here's a story from the UK. A lot of the updated news of the situation seems to be coming through there. From what i saw yesterday and last night, the Mosques and government were urging the people to revolt in the streets against the military coup.

It was taking too long for me to load, Diane. I'll try later.

Beheaded? Are they into that also?

I heard that they want the death penalty for those involved in the coup and since Turkey doesn't
Have the death Penality they're thinking of changing the laws.

Is it true that the cleric who instigated the coup lives in Pennsylvania??

I just read today that Erdogan is forcing Islamic extremism down the peoples' throats, and is likely to cause some very serious things ion the future to happen. He is said to hate Democracy.

I just read a bunch of differing opinions, everybody sees it differently...it's complicated, that's for sure.

One thing is certain, it's not going to help tourism. Turkey is a pretty popular destination, especially on European cruises. My sister has gone twice. They are going on a European cruise in August, thankfully Turkeys not a stop but there's lots of trouble everywhere.

My daughter already booked their European cruise for next summer when my oldest grandson graduates...who knows what will be going on then.

When I lived in Hungary, I had a chance to visit Turkey but instead went on a group tour to Tunisia, I enjoyed that also. Since I was the only American in the group they always had to wait for me because I needed a visa and they didn't.

I went in 2000 right before 2001 and I thought everyone was very friendly, really liked the people.

There were lots and lots of stray cats everywhere...most I've seen in my whole life.

Sorry...got off topic walking down my memory lane. :)

    "Turkey's last hope dies"

"Friday night’s failed coup was Turkey’s last hope to stop the Islamization of its government and the degradation of its society. Reflexively, Western leaders rushed to condemn a coup attempt they refused to understand. Their reward will be a toxic Islamist regime at the gates of Europe."

"So a great country is destroyed by Islamist hardliners before our eyes—and our president praises its “democracy.” "

Now he can get rid of all opposition and become a real dictator. You might think he caused it because he is benefiting from it.

One scary part is the US lost control over nuclear weapons they had in Turkey for a while

The ongoing mess over in Turkey. Turkey says it will close the American airbase until they deport /extradite Poconos from the US that they claim he was behind the coup. Also this airbase has nuclear weapons making it interesting that the US has no control now.
Another interesting thing is 42 military helicopters have gone missing since the coup.
Scary that if some nuclear weapons were also missing would anyone say anything?

I was rather alarmed when I saw the coup on tv. I am ready for some peace within the US and outside of our country ss well.
