I'm not in favor of poaching, but I saw a post recently on Facebook, I believe, about a government burning a huge stash of ivory. Somehow that's supposed to deter poaching, but that doesn't make sense to me. The animals are already dead, and by disposing of that ivory, the price of other ivory will probably increase, which seems as if it would lead to increased poaching.

Maybe I'm missing something. It just doesn't make sense to me. Destroying the ivory seems to make the animals deaths even more pointless than they already were.

O.k., here's a link to the story. The burn was in Kenya, the story was on CNN, but I don't visit that site, so I probably saw it on Facebook or Twitter. http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/30/africa/kenya-ivory-burn/

Yes, I would agree. They must have a reason for doing it, maybe so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands, and the poachers can't make any money on it, but still, it seems counter intuitive. I just think as long as poachers are being paid for this ivory, they are going to continue to do as they have always done, and be poaching and selling ivory. It is so sad. I hope pressure can be put on Asian countries who buy this ivory.

Yes, they will make their profits, and with these caches destroyed, the value will increase, while will probably give others the incentive to get into the market. It sickens me to see and hear about this. Another similar thing is when animals are killed for one part, such as those considered aphrodisiacs. It amazes me that it seems the world is falling apart, yet so many people are concerned about sexual performance, between the market for those items, as well as all of the cialis, viagra and extenze commercials. Here's a story from the UK about bizarre animal aphrodisiacs available in the China markets: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-species-healing-qualities-believed-have.html
