This video is several years old, but still fascinating. The people in the pickup truck are brave; mama bear is lurking in the background.
Where my sister lives in New Jersey there are lots of bears and you can't put your garbage out til the morning or you'll find it in shreds scattered all over the street. When I visited on summer I saw a mama bear and her 3 cubs in the back yard. My sister says they are usually harmless and nobody has been killed by them. I did read recently that someone was killed around that area but it's rare. I'll have to find the pic I took of the bears.
When I lived out in the country in Idaho, we had to haul our garbage to the dumpster . One day, the kids and I went to the dumpster with our household garbage in the back of the pickup. I pulled up along side of the dumpster and parked the pickup, and got out to put the garbage bags in the dumpster. The kids were in the back of the truck to hand the bags out to me. Just as I walked around the back of the truck, a HUGE old bear reared up on it hind legs, from behind the dumpster ! ! It had been invisible behind there when it was down on all fours, but once it stood up, it seemed to tower over us. I scrambled back in the pickup, told the kids to hang on, and we kicked up dust getting out of there. We gave the bear a couple of hours to finish her snacking out at the dumpster, and then went back again and (carefully) unloaded the truck. After that, we were always careful when we went there to be sure there was not a bear behind the dumpster .
I didn't find the pic with the mama bear and cubs in my sisters yard in Sparta, NJ but did find one of a black bear in her empty garbage can. She took this photo and sent it to me.
It looks scary and they are abundant in her area but there has been only one incident of a bear killing someone in more than 100 yrs. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/23/n...student-during-a-hike-in-new-jersey.html?_r=0
