    Hello, Forumites!

I just finished installing my new LENOVO computer. I'll be asking many questions on how to get back in the groove again, this time with an unfamiliar OS.

    Have patience with me!

Be careful Lenovo is a Chinese company.

Well Hal, I have had Windows 10 on the Dell for about 3 years and I pretty much have a safe space in my shop just for venting after I use the dern thing for anything serious. First piece of advice, do not depend on Cortana. She’s a lousy maid and doesn’t do Windows very well. Second piece of advice is to make sure you do not have anything heavy sitting around like a ball peen hammer whilst using the OS.

As a little bit of encouragement though, it uh,.....uh.....dern, I forgot what encouragement I was going to provide.
Oh yeah, the best of luck with your new toy!! :)

Then what do you recommend I do, Tom? I still have the packing and receipt…

Tom, the computer I just retired after 8 years of trouble-free service was a Hewlett-Packard, also MADE IN CHINA!

    Hello,

What books do you suggest I buy to aid in understanding and setting up my new Windows 10 Computer?

    That Start Menu is overwhelming!

How about "Windows 10 For Dummies, Idiots, and Fools"?

I now have windows 10 on both my computers, and don't mind it. It is not as friendly as Windows 7 for old folks, but it is MUCH better than Windows 8. W10 is mostly for younger people who do a lot of things differently than most of us older people do. @Hal Pollner if you just play with it a while, you will get used to it.

Here is a tutorial if you need it:

Whilst the computer itself might have been made in China, Hewlett-Packard is an American company headquartered in California.

Nearly everything we own was either built overseas or we get parts from overseas. :(

Sorry I worded it wrong as I wanted to be polite.

All computers are made in China the cheap ones and the good ones

The Cheap Lap tops are crap and not worth buying

I have a 1.5 gig Packard Bell for the last 8 years.... going from W7 to W10 was a pain in the arse but was sorted out and W10 was much better

Think with the cheep lap tops will have problems with W10.

It took quite a while for Windows 10 to install, and I was worried that something had gone wrong, but it works okay. For the sake of usability, I would prefer some of the previous versions but, then, I haven't really given it much of a try.

Are you using the new one now, @Hal Pollner , or are you still using the old one while you are figuring out the new one ?

Did you watch the video about using Win-10 that Don Alaska posted for you ?
That should answer a lot of questions, and a look on youtube for Lenovo computer Windows 10, should give you a lot more helpful videos that you an watch for tutorials.

@Yvonne, I figured out how to access the Forum on the new one, but I'm not looking forward to any more exploration. I didn't watch Don's video...I don't remember seeing it.

W10 just seems too overpowering and unfriendy, so I'm going to box up the computer, return it, and re-install my HP Windows 7 Machine.

This makes the THIRD TIME that I've taken home and installed a W10 machine and it's the last time!

Hal--you probably should keep the Win10 machine and learn to use it. Microsoft is ending all support and security updates for Win7 on January 14, 2020.

I can totally understand that, @Hal Pollner ! We have a Dell XPS-18 with Win-10 on it. I won’t even touch it, and Bobby uses it; but I hear him over there grumbling at that stupid machine ALL of the time .
Thankfully , we have our Apple devices, which are simple to use and never misbehave. I have noticed that the people who grumble about computer problems on this forum all seem to have Windows devices, and the people with Apple devices are either saying how much they like them, or how dependable they are.
Good luck with getting the old computer back up and running again, and hopefully, it will keep going for you for a while.

As I recall Windows 10 comes with default settings geared toward touch screen use. You can set it up to operate pretty much like Win 7, if you take some time. .In fact whatever is different from Win 7 I've long ago forgot about (except controlling the updates). I think I'll always prefer a mouse. A mouse is more controllable, imo.
