Well, where we use to live, Jacksonville, Florida, Black History month was (somewhat) celebrated, but the demographics there called for it. Meaning, demographics was 35% to 40% black. Where we live now, the black demographics is less than a half percent (.5%).
How to celebrate? We have Motown music. Listen to it to celebrate? There is no parade here or other celebration that goes on. The demographics just don't call for a celebration. Less than 1% black is an extremely low amount of black people here. Denver, CO will celebrate, but Denver, the Capitol of Colorado, is much, much more diverse than here. Some folks think the city we live in is "racist" due to 98% White, but then again, when we had a house in Parker, CO, it was about the same percentage of White (98%). Not everyplace in America is diverse within it's population.
I will add that I am much more interested in black history (or any history) than "gay pride." We straight people never get to celebrate.
We watch movies with: Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, Octavia Spencer, Forrest Whitaker and other terrific black actors/actresses. Another thing, we wouldn't go to a Martin Luther King Parade or event.
I don't do Black History month or womens history. I do not "celebrate" things like that. I like American history, and enjoy all of our notables with out consideration of color Same with movies and television, I do not watch any thing based on someones race.
Just opened Amazon's website and they are advertising movies like, The Help, Black Panther, Hidden Figures and Coming To America to buy for Black History Month. We have, and love watching Hidden Figures. Music, like artists, Sly and the Family Stone, Sam Cook, Aretha Franklin and all of the Motown greats. We already have a number of Motown's finest, as in The Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops and others.
Not missing much of anything Lon. If there is a show or documentary or story that I am interested in,I watch it, but I don't search on the basis of race or gender.
