I remember one time when I was between jobs and was collecting unemployment benefits. This was in California back in the early seventies when the allotment was in cash rather than a check. I did not get a great deal of money, but it was enough to pay the rent and barely purchase enough food to eat. As I left the office, I saw a bum and for some reason had a feeling I should give him a few dollars even though I really had no excess to share. So, I gave him two or three dollars and started walking away. I immediately turned around to tell him the money was for food and not cheap wine, but he was gone. I mean totally gone. I was in my prime back then and started to jog around looking for the man, but it was as if he never existed. Within a day or two of that event, I was offered a decent job and once again was not in need of any outside governmental help. Still to this day I wonder if he was just very quick, or perhaps an angel seeing what condition my heart was in.
