We visited with one son's family today. They have three children--two girl and a boy. The boy, who is ten, told me it was nice to play out side, but it was just too hot today to be outdoors.
The temperature was 64 F. He will play outside happily at -25 F. however.

My wife spent a year in Alaska at age 19, 1970, with her husband, an Army PFC. They lived in Delta Junction. She recalls the cold vividly, but also the wonderful salmon they were allowed to catch in large quantities. 18 was the drinking age........;)

Life was different then, but many things are the same. That was before the Pipeline.

Interesting interpretation of what "hot" temperatures are . It's all a question of perspective i.e. of what you are used to, I guess. I know a lot of folks who'd never call someone a wuss if that person enjoys being outside at -25F. :D Thing is it might be hard for him to live at any other place than Alaska if 64F are too hot for being outside.

The pipeline turned out to be a farce, IMO. See, I took over an ARCO service station in summer, 1972, the rep assuring me and my partner, my nephew, we would be swimming in gasoline when that project began delivering. Then, around Christmas, I got a letter from ARCO stating that beginning the next month, deliveries of gas to my station would be limited to 60% of same-month year-earlier deliveries. I got the hell out ASAP, at great loss to myself and my family. Another young fool like me from back east, this one from NJ, jumped at the chance to take the station over. He lasted less than a year. The Arab oil embargo disrupted our lives, but not irretrievably, and even good came of it, for us. T-V news showed tremendous lines of cars waiting to buy fuel; stories of limited delivery quantity per car, back east it looked hopeless. In Las Vegas, the gas kept flowing as though by miracle. Strip stations may have had 5 or 10 cars in line, my station had none!

We enjoyed our vantage point west of the strip, much higher in elevation, we could discern the big signs like Stardust, Dunes, etc. Soon, Pres. Nixon asked that those signs be extinguished by midnight. Most Casinos complied. Soon, 55 mph became national law. The Arabs had screwed us big-time, yet today we could reverse that reaming easily, but will not. As soon as Washington pressure eased a bit, the big resorts began leaving their llavish signs on later and later. It was a farce unfolding in sin town. We loved it there!
