Here are directions to a well known, but seldom seen, attraction in Northern Maine. There are two locomotives far into the Maine wilderness. Here are some better photos of them, and a brief history of how they came to be there. If you follow the links, you'll find a lot of other nice Maine photos as well.
@Ken Anderson Amazing photos! Thanks, Ken! As you know, steam locomotives are one of my precious memories. Far from hidden in the woods, the pic below is my old high school friend, Charley, and myself, by the big Santa Fe 4-8-4 Northern preserved in Kingman, Arizona. The Santa Fe mainline still passes through that town, which is County Seat of Mohave County. When operating, this locomotive, with tender and fuel and water, weighed around one-million pounds!
In Hawaii on Oahu there were trains too. Dole Plantation Train ride and Hawaiian Railway Society has a historical train ride. image is from http://www.smartdestinations.com/oa...io_Att_Dole_Plantation_Pineapple_Express.html. image is from http://www.hawaiianrailway.com/.
Thanks for the fantastic pics @Ken Anderson, they are pretty awesome. YOu wonder how things like that come to be sometime. What an odd place to abandon a locomotive. Maybe it got stuck in a blizzard or something. Are there any theories of how that train came to be there? I would be curious as to how it ended up in that particular location.
It was built there to haul timber out, and was left there when the timber ran out. Ken, I found the "directions" to be enough excitement for me. Great story and pictures! Thanks
The grandsons would love those. Ive take a ride on the sugar cane train in Maui with the grandsons. I've been to a few parks that the grandsons frequent...both sets. Here and Illinois and quite a few have an old locomotive in them that the kids can climb on...and fall off.
Seems the one I was talking about in CA where I've taken the 2 older grandsons years ago has the locomotive fenced off for now...guess it's not safe. http://www.monterey.org/Services/Parks-and-Beaches/El-Estero-Park-Complex
