Thought I'd post my short list of Movies that are worth checking out.
These aren't in any order, just added from memory.

    Double Indemnity 1944
    The Maltese Falcon 1941
    The Grapes of Wrath 1940
Treasue of the Sierra Madre 1948
    Fantasia 1940
    Citizen Kane 1941
    Miracle on 34th Street 1947
    Sahara 1943
    Twelve O'Clock High 1949
    Casablanca 1942

I'll probably do one that covers the 50's.
That one will be harder, lot of great movies that decade.

I like your list. My favorite forties movie is 'Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid' (1948) with William Powell and Ann Blythe. Whenever I saw it listed during the day in TV Guide I would find a way to play hooky so I could watch it. My mother had to know!

I have not seen that one. Will search it out.

I am a big fan of William Powell and his 'Thin Man' movies.
( he also played Lt. Doc in the movie " Mister Roberts " with Henry Fonda )

I'll add these three. I don't always like the best movies. Sometimes just something in them clicks, maybe just one part of the movie and I remember it. But the acting has to be pretty good.

The Best Years of our Lives, 1946
The Shepherd of the Hills, 1941
    Sergeant York, 1941

I'm not a great movie fan these days.. I just don't have the patience to sit through them. but fortunately now when a film comes on tv I can watch it in increments ...

Some of my favourites from the older genre ..apart from the big Classic musicals which are my first love..are.. ( some not in the 40's)

    Brief encounter

    Whisky Galore

The bridge on the river Kwai ( Tears from me , every time at the theme music)..

    Guess whose coming to dinner

In the neat of the night
