Today begins National Doughnut Week. While you may celebrate with your usual glazed or sprinkle variety, it might be worth branching out—doughnut shops around the country often have special flavors they are proud to call their own. Get inspired with some of the most extreme varieties .

(I know, it's not national donut week. It's national un-donut week.)

Which would you choose? . (I'd choose the Boston Cream.)

Thanks Beth for getting our "This Old Donut" thread out of the freezer! I seem to recall that the National Donut Convention is coming up, and I just might try to attend. Ten donuts just might be my limit, this morning.....o_O

It is hard to choose ! I love donuts, but seldom buy them; so we probably have not had a donut for 2-3 years, and when I did get them, it was an apple fritter for each of us.
I remember eating the “cream puff’” donuts years ago when there was a bakery that made them, but (alas) that was well over 50 years ago.
I think I want the bear claw. I like those, too.
We don’t have any real bakeries around here, and the donuts from the grocery store are nothing special.

The first Krispy Kreme opened in Winston-Salem, NC in 1937.

    So many delivery vans!

This is the one in Raleigh, on the corner of "Person" and "Peace" Streets. They used to have a window around back you could watch donuts being made. Looks like they've expanded the bakery part.

I had (at least) 2 Boston Creams for breakfast almost every day, until I started gaining weight. :p

Thanks for the chance to take a trip down donut memory lane.

Did you ever make donuts at home? I enjoyed watching them turn themselves over (deep frying) when my mom made them, which wasn't often.

Yes, when our kids were small we tried our hands at donut making. It was so much easier to ride through the Krispy Kreme drive-thru, though. :D My mother made a type of donut, more like a beignet... fried dough "pillows" sprinkled with powdered sugar.
