I regard "How are you doing" from a complete stranger to likely be the opening statement in some marketing or other ploy. Since I don't answer calls from unknown parties, that isn't much of a problem. If it is a personal encounter with a stranger, I go on high alert, put on my hard look and stare them down. If it is someone I am dealing with (e.g. store clerk, etc.), I say "Fine, thank you, and you?" If it is a good friend, I try to get them to smile with some banter.

I understand Oregon essentially banned the purchase of firearms within the state, @Faye Fox so I suspect there will be fewer armed folks now...unless they buy the guns in Idaho....

Long ago, in a galaxy far away, we would answer fine, and then try to find a good place to say good bye or I'm not interested and hang up. But people got pushier so we got ruder. It is kind of a sad progression.

Most of the sales calls nowadays are not even real people, just recordings; so it is not a real person we hang up on. If I get a call and it is a real person, I usually do listen and then say no thank you and hang up before they can say anything else.

My phone can be set up to only receive calls from known numbers in my contacts, and I usually do that unless I am expecting a call that would come from an unknown number, and then I turn it off.
When it is turned on, then it sends any unknown calls straight to voicemail, so if it is an important call, then they leave a message and if it is a telemarketer call, they just hang up when they get voicemail.

Not banned, but strictly controlled in the state with more of a ban in the Portland area. The measure included wording to ban all magazines holding over 10 rounds and strict background checks by State Police rather than by a local Sheriff Dept., thus taking away county control and giving it to the state that can be ordered directly by the governor and our new governor will make the sorry excuse for human existence ultra-liberal Kate Brown look like a conservative. We are in trouble as is every state in the west except Idaho.

Multnomah county, 466 sq miles 816,000 pop, decided the fate of Oregon with 98,381 sq miles and 4.24 million pop. It all came down to Multnomah county holding off on the final vote count until all other counties were in and they saw this measure would fail and the election of a Republican governor was highly possible.

I would like to see the day that all counties held off on their vote counting until Mulmpmah was counted completely and also the same applies in other states where it is always the liberal counties that require days to count their votes and results are only announced after all the other counties are called.

I understood there was some kind of permit system put in place to buy a gun in which training would need to be provided, for which there are neither facilities nor funding. In essence, it would make it impossible to buy a gun in Oregon. Info from Tom Gresham if you know who he is.

Sorry, @Faye Fox mentioned people being armed and being uncomfortable and I tried to comment that that will be less common now.

Funny reply.... I'm doing everybody that don't do me first. The good ones, I'm doing all over again. ;):)

Actually, what I say is, "I am well, thanks. How 'bout you?"

Anyone remember the old "How ya doin" Budweiser commercials? I can't get them to load on here, but if you want to have a good laugh, look them up on YouTube.

The classic is Joey Tribiani on Friends and his line "How YOU doin'?" It worked for him.

I have never understood the purpose of asking How are you doing, when people repeat the same each time. I am fine how are you? We all know its a crock, but insist on saying that. I know its just a pleasantry exchanged among people, but so useless unless answered truthfully- ok well it does run people off..
How you doing ? My back hurts, right arm is in great pain, life sucks but I continue on....:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Many of the things we commonly say to each other are just a way of expressing caring and friendship, and asking a person how they are doing is something that definitely shows caring, even when we do not expect a detailed answer.
We also often say “see you later” when we know we are not going to to that, and “God bless” when someone sneezes. We know it does not do much good to say “sorry for your loss”; but it is the thought behind these expressions that i think is important.
We tell friends to stay safe, or to be well, and probably other things that do not come to mind right now, and they are all just kind of a verbal way of shaking hands or giving someone a friendship hug.
