Like Ken's one thread stated "not directly related to Senior employment, but to employment in general".

Has anyone here ever had to take a job transfer to another city/state to avoid being unemployed? And, if you'd never visited the city/state the transfer was to, how did it work out? IOW, there are those that will take a job transfer and then, later, find out that they don't really like the city they were transferred to.

We had a neighbor, at our last apartment complex in Jacksonville, FL, that took a transfer from Portland, Oregon to Jacksonville. It was either take the transfer or lose her job. After a number of months, my wife and I asked her how things were going. She said "if it weren't for the transfer, I would've never moved/lived here. All of my family is in Portland, but I wanted to keep my job, so........."

I would think there are those that lived in So California, in a "no snow/winter" area, that took a transfer to Denver (that has a winter/snow) and wished they'd just stayed in So California.

    Thoughts?

My Brother took a job in California with a big pay increase, found out the big cost of living increase and came right back to New York. One of my best friends moved to NE from Connecticut because of no work, and stayed there. Bought a farm which is what they always wanted.
i don't move. Ask my husband how easy it was to move me two miles.

I think the lady in your story just missed her family, and didn't mind living in Florida.

I've mentioned before that I lived my entire adult life in the same town I grew up in outside of DC because of the strong regional job market. I traded other experiences for job security.

I had one job move to the west coast, and I decided to stay where I was.

Wrong, John! Completely wrong. She told us straight out, "I would've never moved to Jacksonville if it weren't for the transfer to keep my job. Florida has bugs galore, hurricanes, tropical storms, tons of lightning and Jacksonville sure isn't for single people."

Now, John, you tell me if she was happy?

John, for the third time now, she didn't like Florida at all. She told us that and that's what my original post stated. IOW, she had to move or lose her job. I didn't take long at all for her to find out that Florida just wasn't for her, but with her job there now...........but, she still didn't like Jacksonville or Florida.
