Had my Thanksgiving meal, took a glucose reading about 3 hours after 485 mg/dl. It is not about 6 hours after and finally got it down to 185 mg/dl not good but better than 485.
I don't know if I should keep injecting insulin according to the sliding scale my doc gave me, it is bringing my glucose down all I had was turkey meat mashed tators stuffing and veggies, don't know why it shot up into the 400's, that is why I say I give up with the GI figuring out what to eat this not that kind of thing.
Got a splitting headache, don't know if it be the brain toomas or the glucose, oh well might as well go to sleep and see if the ache is gone when I wake up if I wake up, go have a cigarette first....

I'm sorry to hear this, Sam.

I can't imagine trying to wrest control of my life from it.

I reckon it depends on how much taters and stuffing you ate.

I don’t want to nag …however I had diabetes and beat it ….did you know spuds / stuffing some veggies
will spike your sugar levels , bread ( stuffing ) is carbs ..carbs = sugar= extra weight …… potatoes carbs = sugar= extra weight maybe try to eat carrots raw as cooking increases the sugar as dose most ROOT VEG …. so I was told by a specialist:)

I was told to eat only sweet potato or any potato in moderation , in Australia where I’m you can buy lower carb white spuds
I’m happy to share hints with you food choices to get your levels down however i don’t understand your readings
cause it’s different to our readings our guidelines are if your levels are over 7,….. 2 hours after you have eaten it’s to high

I use an Accu-Chex Guide me glucose meter and my doc said the normal range I should try for is 80 mg/dl to 120 mg/dl and an alc of 6. I get frustrated with the GI of food, constantly having to weigh values of food to determine what I should or should not eat. I am thinking to cut out all potatoes and break all together. I guess I should kick myself in the butt since it were me that got me in this mess, I need to get off my butt and walk this weight off if I want normal glucose readings but it is easier to look for a scape goat or someone or some thing to blame than own up that it is entirely my fault for the life style I live.
I never had this problem growing up since I were up at 4 am out in the field, doing chores before breakfast very active lifestyle as Amish youth but when I left home I kept eating as much as I ate when home only my lifestyle was not so active anymore so I did not burn or use all the food I stuffed myself with to get thru the work load of the day.

Do you like music and if so what kind? I find exercise has to be fun or at least enjoyable for most. I know it does for me.

I take two meds for my Diabetes 2: Metformin 2000mg daily, plus a 5mg Glipizide daily. My glucose number is generally in the 150 area and that is fine with my VA doctor. My wife, a Diabetic 2 also, take only Metformin. On days we know that we won't be eating that good, we don't take do blood glucose meter the next morning.

And, most definitely don't check our blood after a Thanksgiving Dinner. Like already stated about mashed potatoes raising glucose, well, so can cranberry sauce for turkey.

You already know one thing you can do and that is to adjust your lifestyle. You mentioned smoking, overeating and lack of exercise. It's hard, but New Year's is coming up when people make resolutions. Please don't hate me. I'm just the messenger. :D

Samual--I'm sure you probably know this, but you should avoid all "white" foods... flour, sugar, rice, potatoes, etc. Basically low-carb eating is best for diabetics. You should also try to get in some exercise, and walking is extremely effective. It's hard but you can do it.

If you wish to eat potatoes, you can cut them with inulin, the main substance in Jerusalem artichokes. You can make stuffing with keto bread that is available at many grocery stores (although quite expensive), and you can make your own cranberry sauce with stevia, monk fruit, or one of the sugar alcohols as a sweetener. If you can't find the inulin, you can use cauliflower.

Sure I like music, bluegrass, folk, Peter Paul Mary, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Cisco Huston and the like. I also like spiritual gospel like Evie Turnquist, Dave Boyer, Doug Oldham, etc. Classical, and I don't know what they call it but music of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Herb Albert, just depends on what mood I am in when I listen to music.

Yes, have to agree it was pretty stupid to check glucose after eating Thanksgiving dinner and expect it to be in normal range, cranberry and candied sweet tators, corncob jelly, but also had to know how much insulin I needed to inject to bring it back down to normal or at least semi normal range. Guess I panicked when it showed 485, my blood must have been like cold sorghum molasses syrup running thru my veins.
