I have had three memorable run in with skunks fist was our police dog attack one and we washed him with tomato juice it seemed to help. The second was a had a trap line for muskrats and caught a skunk was not able to get back to that trap for months. Third was by brothers cottage had skunks visiting every evening and did not know how to stop them. I took his garden hose and sprayed them and chased them off the property they did not spray, to took two nights and then they did not return.

I heard about the tomato juice theory from a colleague at work whose dog was sprayed. She said it worked. Maybe for dogs not humans.!

Thought I'd comment on this again to revive the conversation. Anyone here ever been sprayed by a skunk?

I haven't but my dog once was. It was horrible. I bathed her but it didn't help much. Thankfully, she was an outside dog and it eventually wore off.

I have never been sprayed by one, but I did have one for a while, many years ago.
A friend stopped by our house and said that he had seen a skunk in the dumpster barrel at the park down the road, so my son, Tony, and I went down to see if we could help the poor little fellow out of the barrel.
When I tipped the barrel at an angle, the skunk was able to climb up the side, and when he got to the top, then I picked him up, being sure to hold the tail down.
Skunks have to be able to push with their front feet and also get their tail up in the air to spray, and since this one could not do that, it was pretty safe to hold him.
I probably should have been concerned that he would bite me, but I wasn’t, and he didn’t. We loaded him in a little cage and took him home, and kept him overnight, and then let him loose in the woods behind my house.
My ex-husband came home from work, and locked me out of the house when I tried to show him the skunk, and it took me a long time to convince him to let us in with the little skunk in my arms.

That's a lovely story, minus your ex-husband being a jerk. I've heard skunks can be fairly calm and don't spray as easily as some folks assume.

I've had dogs that have been sprayed. Nothing worked to de-stink them.

My current home had been vacant for a number of years, and a family of skunk were on the property when I first arrived. I walked up to a couple of them in an open area (making sure they had plenty of room to retreat) and took pics. I liked having them around. They dig out the ground nests of yellow jackets and eat other pests.

I don't know if my presence scared them off or what. The critters in these rural ares seem to be different from their cousins in suburbia who have habituated to humans.

It's neat you could get so close to them.

I'm on 51 acres surrounded by farms on all sides. The cleared lot the house sits on is 7 acres. They got plenty of room. But I am surprised that did not seem to be too concerned over me.

Here's another guy that only had a white head and no stripes:

I have one more pic of this guy. I thought I got more pics than this, but maybe I decided to not press my luck.

I'm sure if you ever did get on the wrong end of a skunk, you'd post about it here. Sounds like a good bit of land.

Not to wander too far afield, but I've taken lots of wildlife pics through the patio doors while standing in my dining room:

Or from game cams at the side of my house...

Bobby was singing this coming home from the fitness center, after we passed a field that had that skunk smell, and I had to post it in this thread.
