I think your truck did you a big favor with "Shudderless Outbound/Shudder Home."

Had it acted up on the way to the dealer, you might have been provoked into a rash decision.
Knowing you had things to mull over regarding the purchase, it wanted to remind you of the original motive.

Darned decent of it, if you ask me.

Maybe it didn't like being washed. It's not used to it.

It just dawned on me they are going to try to get me to sign up for some extended warranty, or service contract, whatever you call it. My first inclination is to say No.

Peace of mind? I think it would be a constant source of annoyance, whereas, if something does go wrong, it will be annoying once and be over with soon. Twice? I doubt it.

Anyone have experience with them? Suggestions?

Opinions are all over the place. I'm on a Mazda owner's forum and it's quite the topic of conversation.

Like any insurance, the issuer plays the odds to make more money than they outlay. Some folks have cars for years and years and never have an issue. Others have claims to file. One guy on the forum had a problem with his folding side mirrors that failed not long after the factory warranty expired, and his extended warranty paid for itself with that one repair. He acknowledges that he is buying peace of mind.

Some folks think that because of all the complexities on modern vehicles, extended warranties are a good idea. But the risk is built into the price of all insurances, so the seller makes a profit in the aggregate.

As you said, what people are really paying for is peace of mind.

You might try negotiating a better deal when you buy it. If they push it, ask them what they're trying to tell you regarding the long-term quality of the truck you're thinking of buying. ;) I put that winky face there, but it's actually the point of it all. If the manufacturer is telling you to cover your long-term risks, then they're telling you that those long-term risks exist, right??? Either that, or they're trying to sell you something you will not use. 50% should be a good place for the two of you to meet. Get them to share the risk with you. If you don't ever use it, the amount you paid is 100% profit for them.

    @Nancy Hart

Just came upon your post. I really enjoyed reading your memorabilia. It reminds me of an aunt who used to speak to us of days gone by. I enjoyed listening to her stories they were filled with simplicity but also so full of awe.

Thanks, Susan. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm living in the past. It's just that some of the intervening years were pretty boring and I've forgotten them. LOL.

I'm dealing with the very present right now trying to buy a vehicle. :p About ready to post the latest update.

Finally got a call back from Ford salesman around 3:30. The truck is no longer available. I suspected that was the case, even yesterday. Beats me why he wouldn't check while I was there. His reason was that it's still up on their website, so it must be available. What's the motivation for them to take it down instantly? None. I wish I could think faster on my feet.

Anyway, he has found another one 424 miles away that has a few more options I don't want, and is $3000 more, but he can "work with me" on that. For one thing, it has the "sports appearance package" and not the "tow package." The tow package actually might have been useful.

Then he says, "...or you can just order one... It would take 8 weeks, not 10." I suspect this one would be slightly more than the one 400 miles away with fewer options.

Just before he hung up, I ask if he was SURE they are still making 2021's, and he said he'd check with the manager. o_O Why do people tell you things they are not sure of? .Strike Two!

He just emailed the new specs and added that the manager said they ARE still making new 2021's right now. The "right now" worries me. I'm leaning toward ordering one now. ( ASAP )

The 2022's are out in Australia. I don't like the looks of the new front end, they are bigger, and have a bigger navigation screen :p :D  They have already gone nuts with the F-150. Ford offers a Ranger Raptor with a V6 in Australia. Maybe I ought to order one from there. Ha!

You are very much in the present, Nancy. It's like a day to day log. At a later date, they become good reminisces.

    Goodluck with your new purchase.

    (4/21/21) Wednesday

The deed is done. Ranger ordered this morning. Half paid for already and doesn't even have a VIN#. They claim as soon as it is assigned a number I can track it's progress---at most 8 weeks. Meanwhile I'll save the number of a good towing service on the phone, in case the F-150 breaks down on the highway. :D Then just rent a car.

This whole experience has been so much fun, I decided if I don't like it, I'll just do it all again when the factory warranty runs out. :p It's good to have several "what if" back up plans.

BTW, the latest story on the 1st Ranger in Atlanta: .Salesman said the dealer who has it would only give it up if they had a Bronco for exchange. They didn't. Makes more sense. This one is better. Just slightly more expensive, only because they give a rebate if you take something on the lot.

Yay! I'll be keeping an eye on the progress of your new Ranger. I've had my eye on one of those for a while but have yet to see one in person. We'd love to get rid of our Jeep Wrangler but it is the "toad" for our motorhome so my husband won't sell it until we ditch the RV since it's set up for towing with a baseplate, etc. :(

So what color are you getting?

Rapid Red metallic, just like the one pictured in post #1768 above.

I don't much like the front end. It looks like it's puckering up to kiss you. But the front end of the new 2022 looks like a clown mouth. Even worse. I added the tow package to this one. Even if it's used just one time it will be worth it, I think.

Better to have it and never need it than to need it and not have it. :D Love that red.

See what price he offers, and if it's satisfactory, tell him he has a deal if he (a) installs a tow package and (b) throws in the extended warranty. They can do the tow package at the dealership. The wiring harness on my truck had a pre-installed plug to attach the harness to the trailer...I bought the adapter at NAPA and plugged it right in.

I use the hitch on my 2005 Canyon all the time. I have a utility trailer and have purchased lots of stuff used. The trailer is also handy for buying oversized lumber (real long 2x4s) that will not fit safely in the bed. You can also put a cargo/bicycle rack and other stuff in the receiver.

Too late, John. Already ordered a new one.

I used the trailer hitch on the F-150 towing a chipper in town and back. Had to get one put on my Camaro when I moved here from Raleigh, just for the move. That was quite an experience. I cannot back up a trailer. :p Had to strategically choose parking places for the whole trip.

By the way, the guy that does the ordering at Ford said if I got the spray on bed liner from the factory it could take up to 2 weeks extra, because they send it off somewhere else to have it done. So I'm getting that done afterwards from the dealer.

    Congrats!!!

I have the same issue backing up a trailer. It seems no matter which way I turn the wheel, it always jackknives unless I can get straight on my target.

I agree about getting the spray-on liner. I had an '89 S-10 pickup with the plastic drop-in liner, and when I went to sell the truck I pulled the liner out to clean the thing and all of the paint had rubbed off!!! The truck was green, but under the liner was pure silver aluminum. When I got my 2005 Canyon I had Rhino Liner sprayed on. Over the years it's chipped in a couple of places, but for the most part it's held up really well.

So when's delivery??? What did you get?

    Estimated 8 weeks. Mid June?

2021 Ford Ranger Lariat SuperCab, 6' Bed, 4x2, 2.3L 4 Cylinder EcoBoost Engine :p, Electronic Ten-Speed Automatic Transmission, Electronic-Locking Rear Axle, Trailer Tow Package, 18" wheels.

A handful of other things that might be nice. Literally dozens of things I don't think I'll care about, but who knows.
