I saw no grand insight in the article. I voted for Trump in 2016, knowing little about him, because he was not Hillary Clinton. Maybe that wasn't a good reason. Friedman seems to imply that the best reason to vote for Biden is that he is not Donald Trump. That's not much of an endorsement.

    I quote a paragraph:
“It congratulates the winners but denigrates the losers,” he writes, because it creates the impression that a “college degree is a precondition for dignified work and social esteem” — while devaluing the contributions of those without a diploma. This has led many working people to feel that elites look down on them, creating the conditions for the “politics of humiliation” that Trump exploits.

"This has led many working people to feel that elites look down on them, "

It's not just a feeling that working people have arrived at for wrong reasons. The elite really do look down on the working class.
I didn't think the article was extraordinary.

I do not think it takes being a Democrat to agree with much of what the author has to write because some of it is psychologically sound.
As an example, Hillary Clinton, whilst campaigning against Donald Trump called those who supported the underdog “deplorable”. That one single action caused a tidal wave of emotions from millions of people in that she attacked the person or rather, the voter and as it should be, people took it personally and walked away from the Democratic construct she was setting up.
In this run, Joe Biden said to a black person that if he wasn’t going to vote for him then he wasn’t black which again, alienated the candidate from a major portion of what could have been a large part of his voter base.

Now, so far as Joe running around for the next 45 or so days feigning sympathy for the downtrodden lower and middle class people, especially to those who already know he wants to delete their careers in the fossil fuel industry, good luck.

I get a "subscription required" and there's no way I'm subscribing to the freakin' NYT.

I got that too. Try again and collapse the "subscription required" section, at the bottom, I think. I got the article without subscribing.

To Beth and Ed. Go to the article. Hit 'collapse' ( the little down arrow ) on the right side of the section that's covering the article. You'll be able to read it.

OK, While I am not up to date on the Administrations foreign policy forays, these are a good thing. Treaties are however fragile things, easily broken for most any reason. I doubt they will last long. However Good on the administration.
I am more interested and concerned with domestic policy which really seems to be chaos!

The writer of the article says something that I agree with, and that is that we should treat people with respect and dignity, regardless of their viewpoint, Admittedly, this is hard to do when someone is hurling insults at you because of the things that you believe in, whether it is religion, politics, or just something important to you in your life.
It seems to me that the hate level towards Trump supporters has only gotten worse now that the anti-Trump people believe that they are going to have the presidency and the power over the MAGA people, and I can’t see that they are trying to do what your article suggests that people should do.
Getting rid of people is a lot different than treating people with respect and dignity.

I believe that every elected official that supports this man have their voting record and speeches prominently featured in any future campaigns. As officials, unless they're involved and indicted in a crime, they go on about their lives.
AOC is young, she has a flashy mouth and an adoring following. She is naïve. She will find that some of her ideas are not possible, most of her ideas a politically impossible ,and all of them are half baked and premature.
She is however extremely smart and if she keeps her toes out of the crap, will make her constituents happy.

The two tweets on the right are from extremists. They are so outrageous that they probably are satire. They do not represent the average progressive any more than the toothless wife beater wearer with the misspelled Trump support sign represents the majority of the right.

And now, we have AO Cortez coming out saying that she is going to make a Democratic enemies list.

It doesn’t take a psychologist to figure out that saying she’s going to make a list is so divisive, so anti-American and will in the short and long run create even more rancor and more enemies than her party already has.

Ya know, this psychological warfare among the politicians has got to stop, Seriously. It has overflowed like a stuffed up toilet and has infected the population as a whole. It is making us all smell afoul and every politician I can think of is to blame, in one way or more, for the stench.

My best hope for AOC is that somehow she will pull off blocking Nancy Pelosi as Speaker. :D I'd buy that for a dollar.

Yeah, but no matter which party someone belongs to, any statement and any backing of any ballot or vote is already noted and can be pulled up on a whim by just about anyone. I can pull up just about every vote that Biden (or any seated congressperson) has made since he hit the senate and who the co-signers and initiators are or were of just about any bill that has gone before congress.
The thing is that the media is lax on doing just that. They pick a side and that’s what the population hears and reads.
    Good post though.

Hey Pete.....ya know, I was just thinking. It’s Vets day.......our day, Happy Vets day.

Somehow, don’t ask my how I derived such a feeling but isn’t Pelosi mentoring Cortez to some degree?

I'm not aware of any mentoring, which does not mean that it isn't happening. :D

    From the Washington Times:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday she plans to seek another term as the House leader — as long as Democrats keep the chamber — but progressives won’t necessarily be in her corner.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Democrat, said shortly after Ms. Pelosi committed to another bid for House Speaker that she would support the California Democrat — if she were the most progressive option.

“I believe that we have to see those races as they come, see what candidates are there. I am committed to making sure that we have the most progressive candidate there,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
