A film made by Disney in 1946. Leading role was a Black man the first to be a leading man(Uncle Remus) Won an Oscar. The left protested outside Disney studios in the 1980s saying it was racist(set in a plantation in the 1800s) Disney will not show the film because of that. You cant buy a copy in the USA. I have it on my Comp as you can still download it off the Internet and its a lovely film to watch.
I haven't seen the film, I'm just so glad people of color aren't typecast anymore Saw a great movie last night 'Hidden figures' Kevin Costner was good as an important guy in NASA building The three main characters were of color - hard enough being a woman there, but these three gals made history as they were so gifted and helped the Nasa programme to achieve the Earth orbit by John Glenn in 1962.
Song of the South was one of my favorites when growing up. I had tried to get a copy for my kids to see it but alas as @Tom Galty said was not available in US.
I've got a copy. You can buy them online. My favorite movie. I was, I think, 5 or 6 when it came out.
Could never understand it why Disney banned it its such a great Children's film. Have it on my Comp and watched it again and cannot see any hint of racism
I enjoyed it also. I am not African-American so I would not know if it was racially offensive or not. I did not think any of the characters were portrayed in a lite that would disparage anyone. Yes they spoke in an exaggerated vernacular, but the so did Dick Van Dyke with his Cockney in Mary Poppins. Every story from Uncle Remus taught a valuable life lesson,in a way that as a child I positively enjoyed. Now you want blatant racism take a look at "Heckle & Jeckle"
I saw it when it was released in 1946. I was ten years old. I thought it was a warmhearted story! However, I don't think any of today's black actors would want to play Uncle Remus in a remake! Hal
