Ir recall when Queen Elizabeth was coronated in 1952. I was 16 then. Ever since then, when she appeared in the news, her consort Prince Philip was always standing by her side. I always wanted Philip to be King of England, because he's so tall and regal-looking, but Royal Family lineage will not permit it. His son "Bonnie Prince Charlie" had an accident when he was handed the controls of an airplane. Long Live the Queen Hal
I don't understand the fascination that so many people have, particularly Americans, with the goings-on of the royalty.
I couldn't meet the Queen because I would never bow or curtsy to anyone, but they ARE great fun to watch. I think part of it is all the interesting documentaries on the history of the UK. Once you start following the whole monarchy since the beginning, the current group becomes part of the continuation of all the stories. I would probably enjoy the history of all the individual European countries, but they aren't in English.
why not ? She's not only the Queen of the United kingdom and Great Britain..she's also Monarch of Australia.. New Zealand Canada.. The Bahamas Barbados Belize Grenada Solomon Islands Jamaica Saint Lucia Saint Kitts & Nevis Antigua and Barbuda Papua New Guinea ..and more..... ..so why wouldn't people have a great interest in her and her family... ?
I admire Queen Elizabeth, but I truly don't see the point of a monarchy. If I lived in GB, I'd be one of those "anti-monarchy" people, mad about my tax dollars being spent on Meghan's Manolo Blahnik high heels.
Me neither I've never been a royalist but, recently I've come to appreciate the Queen in particular, she's done such a good job representing this country. Recently, Charles was to cut back on insignificant royals and its about time this was done. Also for me, my main interest regarding royals is William and Kate, so far, outstanding representatives of this country.
I just love William and Kate. What a classy royal representation they are. It seems Kate was just born to fill those shoes. For me, the whole bowing or curtsying thing would be saying I think one person is better or more important than another person. I would have a hard time without laughing or just feeling a bit silly. However, I think as time continues, there will be less requirement of that sort of thing.
I agree about the money part since they do have approx. $580 million pounds in assets. Perhaps they could just be on a salary, because they DO represent the UK around the world and bring in a lot of money in the tourist trade. They also host a lot of international dinners for goodwill. I like the idea of continuing the historical aspect. I would find it sad if they decided to dissolve the monarchy.
Here is one Aussie patriot that finds Australia's continued ties to the UK and the British Royal Family archaic and pointless. Perhaps I need to voice my opinion in the new Soap Box thread.
What are you talking about Hal? "Bonnie Prince Charlie" died in 1788. Prince William of Gloucester was a paternal cousin to the Queen. He crashed his plane and died in 1972.
I'm sure there are advantages or Australia probably would've broken ties way back. I think it would include exclusive trade agreements and immediate help in any military related problem.
The present Prince Charles was informally called "Bonny Prince Charlie" during his maturing years. He was not injured in the mishap. Hal
