If you were of age, today, would you think of becoming a police officer somewhere?

So far this weekend, starting on Friday, there has been three patrol officers killed in the line-of-duty. One had a vest on, but the bullet still got his heart. Another was said to have been ambushed behind the police department. One shooting was in Houston, TX, another in Fayetteville, Ark and the other in Huntsville, Alabama.

Just what can be done about this???

I was offered an “early out” in 1969 from the U.S. military if I volunteered for duty as a police officer in Washington D.C., or as a CHIPs officer in California.
D.C. was a major battleground back then as were many areas in Southern California so a deal was made by the government to allow veteran combat soldiers to fight a different kind of battle in civilian life.
    Obviously I didn’t do it.

All that said, the war is different now than way back in the late 60’s. One acquaintance of mine, a U.S. Army Ranger turned police officer told me that the majority of the problems faced by cops today are either highly political or based on the sale and consumption of drugs....or both.
In other words, the criminals of today either have an agenda motivated by emotion and / or so high they do not care who they hurt....or how.

So in short, I didn’t do it 50 years ago when I really didn’t care if I lived or died so I derned sure wouldn’t do it today when I do care. People just do not get enough blood shed even with their play time war games on the computer.

No, not only because it's a dangerous job and suspect that it won't get better. It's never been something that I thought about making a career of.

I just read that the officer the officer that was shot multiple times, after he got out of his vehicle to simply ask the suspect some questions, the suspect told investigators he did it because he didn't want to go back to jail. The suspect was making his girlfriend walk with him and, when the officer pulled up, the girlfriend yelled out "he's the one you want!". The call was supposedly a domestic disturbance, but the officer didn't see that in progress when he drove up. The suspect had two handguns, pulled one of them and shot the officer multiple times. The officer had no time to defend himself at all. The officer, even though shot, was able to call in the shooting. The suspect ran, but was later captured. Both handguns found.

Only if I could work in the Crime Lab, as lab work is where all my experience has been in my years in Aerospace.

No way. It's absolutely horrible with all the crazies out there. What a disturbed society we live in.

Actually back in the Prohibition days, disturbed society and crazies were also. Those days, Tommy guns were used. St. Valentine's Day Massacre was back then.

The boyfriend's son is a Deputy Sheriff. We worry about him all the time. Luckily, he's up in the helicopter part of the time and I worry a lot less about him crashing than I do about some crazy shooting him.

Me too!! I absolutely hate what they have done to so many families The children suffer and then end up repeating the cycle. Lives needlessly torn apart by abuse, neglect and prison sentences.

I know some police officers may cross lines and do the wrong thing, but overall, it takes a special person to risk their life day after day. Their job is to get in the middle of all the crazy society has to offer. They don't get paid near enough money.
