Wife and I love LJS. Idon't think corporate does all that much to help their franchisee though. We had one local, but the owner at some point quit caring and theplace got filthier and filthier until it was closed down by the county. The only one left in the state? possibly is about a 100 miles away. Fortunately the family cemetery is 'near, so I have an excuse to get my Long Johns fix every couple of months.
We have a chain here called Captain D's, similar to Long John Silver's. It's mostly in the southeast. Last time I was there the food was very good and reasonable. Not fancy though.
My oldest son loved LJS when he was small, so we'd go occasionally. I agree, as the years passed the place seemed to get dirtier and dirtier...perhaps because of the never-ending grease hanging in the air from all the fried food. The local one is closed but there's another across town though it isn't worth the drive. (And my son is all grown up, lives in Oregon and is a health-food nut, lol.) My favorite fish and chips type place was Arthur Treacher's, but I haven't seen one of those in forever and I don't believe they exist any longer. Nancy, we also have Capt. D's, but I don't believe their food is nearly as good as the LJS of yesteryear. Of course with all the new food regulations and modifications, nothing tastes as good as it did. Even McDonald's fries are a disappointment these days.
We have both the Long John Silver and. Captain D’s Here, but the LJS is quite a ways away from our part of town, and i have only been there one time. the food was good, but the Captain D’s is just as good, or maybe better, and they have senior’s specials on Sunday and Wednesday, which is a plus ! Back when I lived out West, we had a fish place called “Skipper’s Fish and Chips”, and it was really great. Some of them even had a small buffet that you could go through at lunchtime, and I love being able to pick and choose at a buffet. Of course, Seattle has all of the Waterfront fish and chips shops, and nothing compared with eating fresh fish and feeding the fries to seagulls out on the dock at Puget Sound. They even sell clam chowder and nectar, and the sign used to say that men had to have their wives permission to drink the clam nectar......
I haven't come across a Long John Silvers in quite a while, although I liked them, and only Captain D's that I was aware of (in Bangor) closed a few years ago.
@Beth Gallagher My favorite fish and chips type place was Arthur Treacher's, but I haven't seen one of those in forever and I don't believe they exist any longer. I liked ATs. There was one somewhere in metro Atlanta, at one time. I believe they had lemon hand pies, a good dessert especially with fish or seafood. Captain D's was one of my favorite fast food restaurants.
We have neither AT nor LJS here, and I haven't been to either in decades. I DID go to a Red Lobster a few years ago in Florida, and ordered the Seafood Sampler or some such. It was the only time I remember going to a restaurant and receiving more food than I could eat.
