I was stuck in an elevator-once-by myself-in the dark for what seemed like eternity but was probably a couple of minutes or three or four I'm really not sure. I couldn't see anything - complete blackness and silence. I felt my eyelids blinking but couldn't see. I was afraid to move - forward, backward or to either side or maybe I was just paralyzed with fear. I remember having this vision of me being suspending in a shaft - just hanging. My knees began to feel funny or was it my legs trembling. Immediately when the lights came back on I pressed for the next floor to make my escape I looked for the stairs and walked four flights up to my destination praying my legs wouldn't give out on me. I stopped several times on the way up. Boy I had on heels and a 2-piece dress suit.

I don't just walk into an elevator as a means to get where I need to go anymore. That experience is always there I just hope and pray that it doesn't happen again.

What a horrible experience! Terrifying. Were you alone in it? gather yes, or you would have said otherwise. This happened a long time ago, I take it? If painful to talk about it, forget my overly questioning ways, OK? I have often pictured just the scenerio you described, and wondered WTH I would do or feel under the circumstance, but I've been lucky enough to have escaped it, so far.

For certain it was not an experience that I would look back on and laugh. It was frightening.

@Von Jones , I may never get in another elevator. I always worry abut it getting stuck for hours, me giving out of oxygen, lying on the floor gasping for my last breath. :p

@Shirley Martin I had those images as well. All the 'what ifs'.

It did occur to me not to get into another elevator but after deep thought "How was I going to get to the eight floor to my job every day?" Fortunately, our office took the whole second floor a couple of years later.

@Beatrice Taylor, an escalator is to steps, as that thing is, to an elevator.

I like it. If it gets stuck, I can still breath.
