    -The two firms behind the pedestrian bridge that collapsed in Miami and killed at least six people on Thursday have faced previous fines and lawsuits for safety lapses.
    Munilla Construction Management and Figg Bridge Group were behind the $14.2 million project at Florida International University that was intended to last more than 100 years and withstand category five hurricanes.

    Just last week, TSA employee Jose Perez filed a lawsuit accusing Munilla of "shoddy work" after a makeshift bridge at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport "broke under [his] weight," the Miami New Times reported.
    Perez hurt his spine and broke several bones when the bridge collapsed in October 2016, his lawyer said.

    Figg was also fined $28,000 by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry when a 990-ton portion of the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge collapsed in 2012 and injured four workers.
    Jay Withrow of the Department of Labor and Industry told the Virginian-Plot it was sheer luck that the injuries were not more serious, and Figg was fined for failing to obtain written consent from a manufacturer before modifying a girder.
    Figg also failed to perform the necessary checks on the girder and did not follow the proper protocol for training and safety, the department concluded.

    Yet they say:

    “In our 40-year history, nothing like this has ever happened before,” the company’s statement said. “Our entire team mourns the loss of life and injuries associated with this devastating tragedy, and our prayers go out to all involved.”

    Why are they still in business? They probably won't be after they settle the lawsuits for this one.

    Just built a few days before it collapsed? Yes, I would say that someone is headed for a lawsuit.

    'm stunned ...6 hours to build a bridge? , and it wasn't supposed to be ready for use until 2019 apparently, so questions are going to be demanded as to why this bridge was allowed to be used..and the road below wasn't cut off from traffic until all relevant safety checks were put in place..

    There's going to be some MIGHTY lawsuits being filed

    It didn't actually take 6 hours to build but to set the span into place. Modular building with pre-stressed sections is pretty common nowadays but obviously something was missing or it would not have collapsed.

    The thing that bothers me most is that Florida is a heavy hitter with construction inspections. Each and every segment along the way of ANY construction is inspected for building and material accuracy according to the specifications that were provided by the architect and pre-approved by the state. Even if the builder IS a total screw-up, the inspectors should have caught it.
    The State of Florida just might have to eat some of the costs of the law suits that I am sure are already being filed.

    Bridges kill. Build walls, not bridges.

    @Ken Anderson True, This!
    One might also consider that few have ever considered suicide by jumping off of a wall, but bridges, especially very high ones, seem to encourage those so inclined.

    "Between 1937 and 2012, an estimated 1,600 bodies were recovered of people who had jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge, located in the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States.[1] The impact from the fall kills 98 percent of people who jump or fall from the bridge.[2][3] As of 2005[update], it is estimated that 26 people have survived after jumping.[4] In 2013, 118 potential jumpers were talked down from their attempt and did not jump."

    "The Golden Gate Bridge, referred to by Krista Tippett as a "suicide magnet",[5] is the second-most used suicide site/suicide bridge in the world, after the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge".

    Uh...not so fast.
    There was a construction guy in Palm Beach, Fla. who was squashed by a section of wall when the temporary supports slipped. Osha fined the construction company because the dead construction man wasn't wearing his hard hat when the accident occurred.
    Well, to be honest, there were other fines for other reasons but the hard hat thing was the one that got my attention..

    When the wall is built on our southern border, the illegals attempting to scale said walls should wear hard hats.

    @Bobby Cole
    Who do you suppose will subsidize the legal costs incurred when these people, largely unemployed, are injured attempting to scale the wall, and the lawsuits begin?
