seems these boys caught a record for New Jersey

BRIELLE, N.J. — A fishing crew has reeled in a 926-pound Mako shark, and New Jersey officials say it's the biggest shark catch in the state's history.

The boat's crew was fishing about 100 miles off the coast in an area known as Hudson Canyon on Saturday. The shark was weighed and displayed in Brielle later that day.

Kevin Gerrity, captain of the boat, says they didn't think they could manage to catch the shark. It took over two hours to pull it aboard.

The New Jersey Division Fish and Wildlife says the previous record weight for a shark caught was an 880-pound tiger shark caught off Cape May in 1988.

The Hudson Canyon is populated by a number of large fish, and has produced multiple record setting fish catches.

but its not a record. back in 2013 a 1,323-pound Mako was caught off Huntington Beach.

    YIKES, that looks like Jaws!!

My grandson has done deep sea fishing I think...also my nieces and nephew. Ive only fished in Wisconsin at an uncles cabin in Eagle River and way up north in Canada in a place called La Tuque I think.

I caught a huge golden pike with my first cast into the water..I was about 23 yrs old. I was ecstatic and the motel cooked it for us and it was delicious.

This was a place my husband went bear hunting and I decided to go along one time.

This was my first, and only, deep sea fishing adventure that happened in 1993.

It was a Charter out of San Diego that a company I worked for got for an overnight fishing trip down to Mexico and back to San Diego. All of us had to drive from the company in northern Orange County, to San Diego for the trip. There was plenty of beer and food onboard for the trip. By the time we got onboard, got bait, headed out to sea and had some snacks and beer, most of us headed off to our bunks in the cabin area. After spending some years in the Navy onboard three different destroyers, I had no problem falling asleep. However, there was one co-worker that had a real "sick problem" going on and spent most of the night with his head in the toilet or over the side (gunwale) of the boat. Next morning we were served scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes and some great coffee. After that, it was "fishing time". Don't remember what we caught, but don't think I caught anything. Had lunch, fished a little more before heading back to San Diego. I was pretty "bushed" when I got home from that trip.

Also, BTW, the other fishing trips the owner/president of the company chartered included lady co-workers and the wives of employee's, the one I went on did not. The owner/president sent out a memo stating "Men employee's only. Sorry, no lady employee's or wives". Apparently, too many ladies either got sick or didn't like fishing, but wanted to go anyway.

We bought saltwater fishing gear when we first got here to Florida in 2009 and ended up both selling and giving it all away. Never used any of it. We prefer freshwater fishing 100% more than saltwater. We still have all of our freshwater fishing gear from Colorado.

However, since my wife has never been saltwater fishing, when cooler weather comes, may take her out on a 1/2 day fishing boat here. She would be an "Observer" and I would fish. She wants to be an "Observer", not me telling or to be. Any fish that I catch would either be sold at the dock or given away. We have no room for any fish in our freezer.

my only one was a junket trip to Mazatlan mexico. that's on the Pacific side. about 60 of us went but only about 12 on the fishing trip. I hooked a blue Marlin that seemed hours to land. it weighed in at 126 lbs. after the battle me and fish were both spent. another guy got a Mako but nothing like the size seen here. we donated them to the poor. and no one brought a camera. so i can't prove squat :)

I don't think being sick sick is a gender related disease @Cody Fousnaugh.

I don't get sea sick but my daughter and baby sister do....but they still go on plenty of cruises and boat trips. They just have to take their Dramamine.

Sounds like a very cool trip though.

When we lived in Parker, CO, we'd go trout fishing on a lake/reservoir down the freeway from our house. We'd be in the No Wake area at 9AM with three rods in the water. Those trout really liked the night crawlers we bought at Walmart. Was in 40 feet of nice cool water. Wife didn't like baiting the hooks, but sure helped me pull them in and net them. Sure miss those summer days in 2005 and 2006. Some weekends, went both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday, after early church service. Left the bowrider connected to the Durango sitting in front of our house.

Actually, I think the owner/president got tired of all the gabbing the ladies done among themselves. As far as he was concerned, this was a fishing trip, not Ladies Day Out. Don't know what size of fishing boat he chartered before I came to the company, but the one I went on sure wouldn't have had enough room for both men and women.

My wife doesn't take anything when we go out on our boat, but definitely does when we use to go out on a casino boat here. Also took Dramamine when we went on our 3-day cruise to the Bahama's.

While living in Hawaii, and in high school, I surfed a nice break on one side of the Ala Wai Harbor.

On the other side was the Bumble Bee tuna factory.

As the fishing boat would come in the harbor after a day of fishing, they would be cleaning the decks of the boats and the 'parts' trailed behind the boats.

I thought to myself a couple of times that if I was a shark, I'd be following those boats and catch an easy lunch.

Now I think back about sitting on my board yards from the channel for hours on end.

'Youth' can make people do not very bright things...

Went deep sea fishing once off Freeport, Texas, fishing for red snapper, seventeen miles out. Caught a number of small shark which were clubbed to death. One larger shark, six or seven footer, was killed and thrown back in.. It was in September and a hurricane was churning down southeast of us and seas got up to five feet or so. We were in a thirty-two foot Criscraft and it got pretty rough. I was just beginning to catch a few red snapper when the waves got up. Got seasick, ruined the trip for me. The rest however caught a bunch. I watch the sharks on TV but no doubt about it, I'm a land lubber.
