A few questions come to mind... Did people attend this church because of its history with George Washington... or spiritual needs? Why not just remove the plaque without any public announcement? Is removing the plaque and announcement really an attempt to generate publicity, thereby increasing attendance and money in the collection plate?
Slavery was the norm for those times both there and here in Blighty. The rise and rise of political correctness is a fungus eating at us all.
Holding people from the past by today's standards is madness, but it's intended to disrupt everything that this country was founded on, to ease the way to a new type of government.
I think the removals need to end with the founding fathers of this country. Before it became the popular thought, as it is now and many years ago I remember thinking how they could state "all men are created equal" when this country did hold slaves. This was a major problem in my opinion. They did however, even with that, help to build this country with, I believe, the oldest standing constitution in the world. I'll let them argue about civil war statues. But we need to leave the beginning of this country and it's founders alone. It's how this country was founded. The good and some bad. And don't forget what was done to Native Americans.
Why don't they just put the plaque's outside of the church and state that this is where they both attended church. Those plaques certainly don't need to be on both sides of the alter..in my opinion that was a bad place to put them in the first place.
I agree with @Babs Hunt about this. They would be better placed in the narthex. They are more historically valuable than religiously valuable.
