I'm not handy. There's a lot of stuff I can't do, stuff that most men do every day or whenever it needs doing. I'm not proud of that but it has always been that way. When I was younger I may have been. I grew up with friends that could fix the family car if something went wrong. It was foreign to come and I had no interest. I mean I could change the oil in the car and gas it up but I couldn't do a ring and valve job, or do a brake job. Fixing a truck tire was major for me. I was trying to fix a flat on a big old White truck one time and could get the rim off. The boss told another helper to go out and show boggs how to change a tire. I still feel bad about it. .He told me to get out of the way, go on. You shouldn't be working at a place if you don't know what you're doing. He stared airing that tire up , just kept on airing. I was gasing up another truck but was watching. I don't know how much air he put in before the rim blew. It was awful. He lost all his front teeth, had a broken arm cut across his body all the way to his ribs, broke three or four of them. Wonder he hadn't been killed. That made my condition worse in dealing with vehicle repairs. Of course I didn't have any sense to start out with. I was not good at working with my hands. I always wanted to strap on that belt of tool and go fix something but i didn't know how. I'm that way with everything.

I stopped by Goodwill the other day and bought what I thought was talking movies. It was a neat package although three discs were missing. In a case, it said fifty movies. James Cagney, Edmond G. Robinson, just a bunch of mystery and detective movies. I couldn't play them. Nor could I get my old video player to work. I didn't know how. My son came over and ask about buying a new player. Why don't you use the one you've got he asked. It don't work, say I. It was a Sony and I'm thinking it had to be reprogrammed to work with other TVs. He pulled out the stand on which all the mechanism sat and hooked it up properly. He stuck in one of the discs I had bought and behold and lo, there stood all my old gangster buddies from the thirties and forties, With Edmond G. still squinting that one bad eye. I haven't played any of them yet but I am glad didn't squander $4.99 on something I couldn't use but sometimes its downright embarrassing to be so dumb. How about you, are you handy? Can you do things around the house?

I'm not handy at all when it comes to the types of things men are good at usually. Since I live alone..it sucks.

Ive done okay with technology so far and even hooked up a new TV all by myself...it's not that hard.

I hate when I have to get on a ladder to change the battery in a beeping smoke alarm but at least I can do it.

Everything else I have to hire someone to do.

Yeah, those smoke alarms get everyone's attention every now and then. My wife has an eye disease and can't see well, she also lost her smell several years ago, She sets the smoke alarm off about once a week on average. I have a long wooden back scratcher I've gotten good at mashing the button that turns the alarm off.

Yup I'm good at most things...but I don't need to do them because I have one of those supermen here that you always wanted to be Bill...

I divorced my first husband when my child was just 8 years old...

I had to sink or swim, there was no-one else around to do stuff, ..so I learned, and also being a carpenters' daughter, I'd already picked up a few things over the years..so changing batteries, replacing lightbulbs, painting and decorating..(no wallpapering tho')... changing plugs , using a hammer , saw and screwdriver and a lot more I became very adept at...

14 years later I married my current husband... and boy did I hit the jackpot when it comes to all things manual.... there's not a lot my husband can't do when it comes to so called 'men's jobs'... his hobby is building cars. so all our cars get fixed by him ( even tho' that's not his trade)... he's an excellent plumber and electrician, he's built walls in our house and decorated so you'd never even know they weren't there originally...., so we never have to call anyone in... he re-tiled all the house, walls and floors, he installed a whole new bathroom with electric shower etc, and even designed the made the bath board and shower to my specification and colours.. ... ..he can take a computer apart and put it back together again and make it work so much better than it did even when it was new..and so on..and so fifth......and that's on top of a 60 hour a week full time job... ( all absolutely true)

He can;t cook tho'.... so unfortunately I have no option, I have to divorce him.....:p

@Holly Saunders , is he up for adoption? I'll be kind to him. :D My Dh was not a handyman so I learned to do a lot of things myself.

OH! OH! Oh! I just saw that you are going to divorce him. Can I have him???????

I have always been able to figure out how to do most things, alot of things I learned to do out of necessity and often I would teach myself how to do something because I thought the price someone wanted to charge me to do it was outrageous!

Reader's Digest used to make some do it yourself books with step by step pictures along with the instructions and I learned how to fix my washing machine and a few other appliances, etc. with these books. I never have thought of things being man's work or woman's work for the most part, if something needed to be done and I was the only one around to do it...then I did it. So yes I do consider myself handy.

I am fairly handy. I have my own little tool box for stuff I do around the apartment. I have even gone to Lowes and bought things to wrap around the tub of dishwasher...so it wont be so loud while running.
One thing I have is my duct tape! I duct tape anything amd everything that needs holding together.
My hubby is a wood worker and make very nice things for me.But I cant do anything like that.He tends to the car only if something simple...since cars are more computerized now...even he cant do much.
@Bill Boggs ......no worry about what you cant do, I am not and have never been good at many things...sports, cards, etc. just useless. But by crackey give me a fly swatter and I nail that sucker everytime:p.I can bring dead plants back to life.
And I can remember squences of numbers very good:p.And I know how to color real well :D:D:D:D:D

you know it's true about cars being computerized now @Gloria Mitchell and the general car handyman can do a lot less on his /her own car than before..when it comes to the engine , etc...but what you can do to save costs is buy a diagnostic tool...we have one, and it saves us a whole lot of money and BS from the garage when we know already what's wrong with the car...and in my o/h's case, once he gets a reading from the diagnostic tool, he can often just buy the part online and fix it himself

...now about bringing those dead plants back to life..... I need to know more... lol

I use to be more of a "handyman" than I am today, but can still do certain things. I use to be a fairly good "backyard mechanic" and do some work on my own vehicle, but not to much intense stuff like changing brakes or tearing an engine down and rebuilding. I could change a starter, generator/alternator, belts, plugs, leaking water hose, but that was about it. Today it's mostly just changing the air filter, checking/adding oil, adding fluids, changing tail/brake lights and that's it. I don't mess with engines that are run by computers........nope! Have to pay to have that done.
My last vehicle, before I married in 2001, was a 1980 Datsun King Cab. Actually, when I met my wife, I had a 1978 motorcycle......my only transportation. I never had a good enough salary to have a newer vehicle.

Most of the work done on our boat has to be done by a marine mechanic, however, I can do battery stuff (winter charging, installing new ones. I did change the ignition switch, which was fairly easy.

We got me a soldering iron set, which I've used, but have to get more experience using it.

My wife is great with taking care of our bills/finances. But, when it comes to running the washer/dryer and dishwasher, she basically ask me questions. I do all of that when she is at work.

I can/do cook, but not as much as I use to. We have found out that, sometimes, eating out is cheaper than buying/cooking at home.

Oh, and can't leave out the old computer and electronic stuff. I'm not a "techy" by no means, but have set-up our computer and other electronic stuff.
