Anyone have experience with Fiverr? My sister's asking about it and I can't really tell from their website if it's successful or not. There *must* be more to it than the way it looks... announce what you'll do for five bucks (within reason, I hope! :p ) and people come to you to have it done?! Where's the catch? Or maybe the catch is that they don't really have buyers checking it out, just sellers? Maybe they take a big cut?

Can it be selling or just services? I'd rather have some testimonials before I'd get her excited about it because most things have catches. If it's as easy as "I'll send you ten of my best PA Dutch recipes for $5" then I may have to check it out for myself... but the cynical side of me says nahhh, I'm missing something.

I was thinking someone talked about it here, but that may have been MTurk. @Diane Lane , was it you?

Never heard of it but I wouldn't want people coming to my house for anything.

Ok, thought you said they'll come to you to have it done. First thought was prostitution but $5 is kinda low. :)

"Come to you to have it done"... contact you. Must be my regional dialect showing again. :D I have taken some serious ribbing from some of the terms that are common around here. Hey Chrissy, JeetJet? Actually don't answer that here... I'll start a thread for it in language category.

Well, I think some people who are skilled and create a niche for themselves do really well on that site, but other people do not do as well, or have no takers. If your sister is looking for work that pays something online, have her investigate Upwork, formerly Odesk, they have a lot of opportunities and some of them pay decent, however, the problem is you are still in competition with others for slots.

I know a lot of people who have had things done at Fiverr, mostly things like a logo for a website, or a quick graphic. I can't imagine that anyone would do anything for five bucks that I'd want so I haven't tried it myself. It is a legitimate site, however.

That's what I was wondering, too... she's not a writer, and she doesn't do web graphics.... so I was thinking like if she could do recipes or something like they used to do in the old Grit newspaper and Women's Circle magazine, "25 of my favorite recipes for $5" she'd do great because she loves to cook like I do. But that's not really a "service" so I was unsure.

I have seen that thread about Fiverr in several sites that I go to. Maybe it's a good site to earn money because some familiar names have been commenting on such threads that they have proof of payments. To be honest, I have no idea about that site so obviously I have no intention to register. As I would say time and again, I joined forums to develop my writing skills which is my tool in doing my office work particularly for the communication part. Maybe when I retire from my job, I would explore the internet for opportunities to earn money.

The site has been around for a while, and some seem to be very successful with it. Although the services are 'five dollars', apparently the really successful ones offer add-ons that bring in additional money, so they are able to make a decent wage there. From what I've heard/read, those who've been on the site a long time and have built up good reputations usually fare better than those who are just starting out, but that seems to be the case on many such sites. I have an account there, but will probably use it for purchasing services at some point, rather than selling them, since I haven't figured out anything much that I'd be willing to do for $5 that people would be willing to pay for.

Reminds me of the old joke where when the gent, who is a tightwad, opens his wallet....reluctantly...and someone says "Lincoln's blinkin'"!

I have a little experience with the site. I think that I did two transactions on there. It is legitimate and you will get your money. The thing that I disliked about it overall was that you really are only getting $5 for whatever you do or sell, and for most transactions, that is going to amount to a very low hourly pay out.

Another thing that I disliked was that I had quite a few people potentially interested, but they just wanted to message back and forth asking tons of questions. I didn't like that. I just wanted to sell the thing and have it done.

Personally, I would rather use a different kind of marketplace or site, but some people do like it.

For five dollars, I don't imagine I'd want to spend a lot of time on back and forth.
